About Porthleven
First impressions? Blimey, what a welcome. No sooner had I wrestled the key from the lockbox than old Reg from next door popped his head over the fence. He's got this wild Einstein hairdo and a face like a weathered barnacle, must be pushing 80. "You the London lot?" he barked, eyeing my reg plate. I admitted I was just a solo wanderer from up country, and he chuckled, revealing a gold tooth that caught the light. "Thought so. Seen 'em come and go. Mind the gulls – they'll nick your chips faster than a taxman." We got chatting about the cottage straight away; he said it'd been in the family since Trevithick himself might've tinkered with steam engines nearby (or so he reckoned). Reg's a retired trawlerman, full of yarns about storms that "tossed boats like corkers" and the time a seal pinched his catch. I was knackered from the drive, but his stories had me rooted to the spot, laughing as he mimicked a gull's squawk. Proper character, Reg – the kind who makes you feel like you've known him for years. Inside, the cottage was cosier than a fisherman's jumper: low beams you had to duck (I'm 5'10" and still bashed my nut twice), a wood-burner begging for a log, and a kitchen window framing the harbour where waves crashed like applause. I dumped my bags and headed out for a mooch, figuring I'd grab fish and chips from the Keverne something-or-other down by the pier. That's when I bumped into Madge behind the counter – or at least, that's what the locals call her, though to her face it's "Mags love". She's got arms like a stevedore from battering cod all day, and a laugh that rattles the salt shakers. "First time in Porthleven?" she asked, wrapping up my haddock supper in paper that smelled of the sea. I nodded, confessing my milk mishap to break the ice. She roared, "Happens to the best! Last week, some posh lot from Truro spilled their pasty gravy all over the boot of a shiny BMW. Proper state!" We nattered about the village – how the surf comps bring in "wetsuit wallies" every summer, but it's the locals who keep the soul alive. Madge swore by her secret chip recipe ("malt vinegar and a prayer"), and slipped me an extra sausage for the road. "Tell Reg I said he's a bugger for nicking scraps," she winked. Strolling back along the harbour wall, past the RNLI station with its lifeboat gleaming like a guardian angel, I met young Jax – well, Jackson, but he insists on Jax, all tattoos and board shorts despite the chill. He's a lifeguard type, patching up his van with gaffer tape. "Staying at Trevithick's? Sweet pad, mate. Watch the steps though – gran twisted her ankle there last month chasing the cat." We bonded over the waves; he's mad for the left-hand break off the pier, reckons it's "pure liquid gold when the swell's right". Jax regaled me with tales of midnight beach fires with the lads, smuggling pasties under their hoodies, and how Porthleven's "changed but not changed" since the mining days. His easy grin and no-bull chat made the place feel like home already. Sat on the cottage doorstep that first evening, munching Madge's chips with Reg popping over for a brew, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life back home's a treadmill of emails and tube delays, but here, these quirky souls – with their tall tales and twinkly eyes – remind you that holidays aren't about fancy spas, but proper human connection. The sea whispered agreement as the sun set, and I thought, yeah, this three-day jaunt's off to a cracking start. |
