About Padstow
I finally made it to Warren Cove after what felt like the scenic route from hell, thanks to my daft decision to trust the sat-nav over a proper Ordnance Survey map. We'd piled into the car from upcountry with the kids buzzing like they'd mainlined Ribena, and about 20 minutes from Padstow, I took a "shortcut" that turned out to be a single-track lane narrower than our fridge. Cue the classic British holiday mishap: a tractor trundling towards us, forcing me to reverse half a mile while swearing under my breath and the little ones giggling in the back. "Daddy's playing bumper cars!" my five-year-old piped up. We emerged unscathed, but I was already vowing to stick to A-roads next time.

Pulling up to Warren Cove just as the sun dipped low over the Camel Estuary, I felt that proper holiday glow kick in. This chalet-style lodge, tucked into a peaceful spot on the outskirts of Padstow, is the sort of place that whispers "relax" from the off. It's got that cosy, no-fuss vibe – think wooden cladding, a veranda begging for morning coffee, and views that stretch out to the shimmering water without a hint of pretension. We unloaded the boot in a flurry of sandy wellies and carrier bags stuffed with pasties from Philps in town (grabbed en route, naturally – crab and cheese, the holy grail). The kids bolted straight for the garden, whooping as they discovered the hot tub bubbling away like a giant jacuzzi for gnomes.

First impressions? Pure bliss wrapped in a bit of lodge-life chaos. Stepping inside, the open-plan living space hit me like a warm hug: squishy sofas piled with cushions, a wood-burner ready for chillier evenings, and a kitchen kitted out just enough for family feasts without overwhelming a cook like me who once burned toast. The kids claimed their bunk-bedded room faster than you can say "sweet FA," while my partner and I sighed into the master with its en-suite – proper luxury after that drive. We cracked open a bottle of Cornish cider (local, obviously) and sprawled on the veranda, watching the estuary turn gold. Seagulls squawked overhead, and in the distance, you could just make out the hustle of Padstow harbour, but here it felt worlds away.

That first evening set the tone for our three-day jaunt – all about those simple pleasures that make family breaks magic. We wandered down to the nearby Trevone Bay at dusk, the kids paddling in rock pools while I skimmed stones like a pro (or so I told myself). Back at the lodge, chaos ensued: dinner was a slapdash affair of fish fingers and chips from Sam’s, with sand everywhere and the youngest smearing ketchup like modern art. Light-hearted pandemonium, the best kind. As they conked out early, I sat reflecting on the deck under a blanket of stars. Life's mad rush back home – work deadlines, school runs – it all faded. Here, in this unassuming Warren Cove nook, I realised it's these unpolished moments that recharge the batteries. No grand adventures needed; just sea air, lodge comforts, and a family fizzing with joy.

Next morning dawned misty but promising, and we pottered into Padstow proper for breakfast at a harbourside café – proper full English with black pudding that could convert a veggie. The town's that perfect blend of twee fishing village charm and Rick Stein buzz, without feeling overrun. Back at the chalet by noon, we fired up the hot tub (kids first, naturally – they splashed like otters), then lounged with books and brews. Afternoon brought a gentle stroll along the coastal path to Harlyn Bay, picking samphire and dodging waves, before hunkering down for pasty leftovers and board games that descended into giggles and mild cheating accusations.

By day three, Warren Cove had us hooked. That insignificant tractor kerfuffle on arrival? Forgotten in the haze of lodge life – the veranda sunsets, the estuary's endless pull, the way the chalet wrapped us in its relaxed embrace. It's the kind of spot that turns a short break into a memory etched in sea salt. If you're after Padstow's magic without the masses, this is your bolthole. We're already plotting a return.
