About Padstow
I finally made it to Padstow after what felt like the world's most faffing-about drive from the M5. It was just me, the wife, and our two lads – ages 8 and 10 – piling into the car with enough snacks to stock a corner shop. We'd planned this three-day jaunt to Lazy Days, that cosy little lodge tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Padstow, for a proper family reset. But of course, nothing goes smoothly with kids in tow. About 20 minutes from the turn-off, I realised I'd left the bloody sat-nav charger at home, and my phone decided to throw a wobbly with no signal. Cue 15 minutes of me squinting at faded road signs while the boys chanted "Are we there yet?" like a pair of tiny, relentless drummers. We ended up doing a daft loop through some narrow Cornish lanes, laughing hysterically as a tractor nearly nudged us into a hedge. Classic dad fail, but it broke the ice – by the time we spotted the Lazy Days sign, we were in hysterics.

Pulling up to the lodge felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. It's one of those proper quaint spots – think wooden cladding, a cheeky veranda with outdoor seating, and flower tubs bursting with whatever's in bloom this time of year. Ours was the end one in a row of four or five similar lodges, all spaced out enough that you don't feel like you're on top of your neighbours, but close enough for a wave and a "alright?" over the fence. The owner, a cheery local chap called Mike, met us with keys in hand and a quick rundown: "Park anywhere, settle in, and the beach is a ten-minute stroll that way." No fuss, no folder of rules thicker than a phone book – just pure Cornish welcome.

Stepping inside was pure bliss after the road rage. The open-plan living space hit you first: squishy sofas in front of a telly begging for footie or kids' cartoons, a kitchenette kitted out with everything from a toaster to a slow cooker (vital for my half-arsed pasty experiments). The lads bolted straight for their room – twin beds, truckle for the little one, and a window overlooking the garden where they could plot conker hunts. Our en-suite double was compact but cracking, with that fresh linen smell and a shower that roared like it meant business. I flopped on the bed for a sec, staring at the beamed ceiling, and thought, "Blimey, when did life get so hectic that this feels like luxury?"

First impressions? It's got that lodge life chaos nailed – in the best way. We unpacked amid a whirlwind of crisps packets and wellies flying everywhere, then cracked open the sliding doors to the private patio. The sun was dipping low, casting this golden glow over the gravel and the bit of lawn where the boys immediately started a game of footie with a half-deflated ball. I fired up the BBQ (gas, thank God – no faffing with charcoal), while the missus sorted fish and chips from a takeaway van down the road. Padstow's magic seeped in straight away: that salty sea air mingling with woodsmoke, the distant cry of gulls, and not a single email ping to ruin it.

We munched under the fairy lights strung across the veranda, the lads smearing ketchup everywhere and regaling us with tales of their "epic" car adventure. A bit of gentle chaos erupted when the youngest knocked over his Coke, flooding the patio – cue much mopping with tea towels and giggles. But sat there, feet up, watching the sunset paint the sky pink over the nearby fields, I had one of those quiet moments. Work's been mad, the school's been mad, life's just mad – but here, in this unpretentious little haven, it all paused. No grand plans, just us, simple pleasures like a full belly and starry skies. Lazy Days lived up to its name from minute one. If you're after a relaxed family break in Padstow, with harbourside walks and pasty pilfering on the agenda tomorrow, this is your spot. Can't wait to see what day two brings.
