About Padstow
Pulling up, I was hit by this wave of calm. The owners had left the key in the door (proper trusting Cornish folk), and stepping inside felt like slipping into a warm hug. It’s tiny – bed, kitchenette, loo, the lot – but done so cleverly you don’t notice. The bed was piled high with quilts, begging for a nap, and there was a little table by the window with views over the wildflower garden. I dumped my bag, cracked open a tin of beans (first meal sorted), and just sat there, kettle on, listening to the birds doing their evening chorus. No TV, no Wi-Fi signal to speak of – bliss. First impressions? Pure escapism. That garden stole my heart straight off. Enclosed but lush, with apple trees heavy with fruit, a couple of loungers under a pergola, and herbs you could snip for your tea. I spent the afternoon wandering its nooks, picking blackberries from the hedge (careful not to get thorns in me arse), and flopping into a chair with a book I’d been meaning to read for months. The sun filtered through the leaves, and I swear time slowed right down. No rush, no plans – just me, a cuppa, and the rustle of pages. Hilarious how liberating doing bugger all can be. Evening rolled in lazy-like, so I fired up the barbecue in the garden corner – simple sausages from the local shop in Padstow, nothing fancy. Sat there as the sky turned pink over the fields, munching away, feeling like the king of my own little kingdom. The hut’s got this outdoor shower too, which I eyed suspiciously at first (open to the elements? Brave!), but under the stars later, it was magic. Warm water cascading while owls hooted – proper Back to Basics, Bear Grylls would approve. Next morning, I pottered no further than the garden path, brewing coffee strong enough to wake the dead and settling in with toast slathered in marmalade. Reading turned into dozing, dozing into more reading – some tatty paperback thriller that had me chuckling at the plot holes. It was during one of these hazy spells, staring at a butterfly on the lavender, that I had a proper moment. Work’s been manic lately, emails piling up like unwashed laundry. Here, though, with the hut’s wooden walls creaking softly and the world reduced to this green bubble, I realised I’d forgotten how to just *be*. No scrolling, no striving – just breathing. Gentle nudge to meself: slow down more often, you daft sod. Wandered into Padstow village mid-morning, a mere stroll away, for pasties from the bakery (steak and stilton, divine) and a pint at a harbourside pub. Watched the fishing boats bob, chatted with a local about the tide times, then ambled back laden with treats. Afternoon? Back to the hut for more lounging – feet up, book open, maybe a cheeky nap as the sun dipped. The joy of it all was in the nothing: no itinerary, just the rhythm of the garden, the hut’s snug embrace, and that rare gift of time stretching out. By day three’s end, as I packed up reluctantly, Hilbre had worked its spell. First impressions don’t get much better – a reminder that the best holidays are the ones where you do sweet FA, and love every idle minute. |
