About Padstow
I finally made it to Padstow after a faffing drive down from the M5, cursing the sat-nav that decided to reroute me through some back lane where a rogue pheasant shot out like it owned the place. Bonnet dent avoided, but my nerves were proper jangled as I pulled up to High Cove, this cracking little chalet tucked away in a peaceful spot just a short stroll from the harbour. It was late afternoon on day one, the sun dipping low over the Camel Estuary, and I was knackered but buzzing to settle in for my three-day jaunt.

First impressions? High Cove hit the spot straight away – cosy wooden vibes, a verandah begging for a cuppa, and that sea air wafting in. But honestly, it was the locals who turned arrival into proper gold. I'd barely unpacked when I wandered down to the harbour for a pint at the Shipwrights Arms, and that's where I met Madge. She's this wiry septuagenarian with a fag perpetually dangling from her lip, regaling anyone in earshot about the "great pilchard wars" of her youth. "You from upcountry, luv?" she barked, eyeing my trainers. I nodded, and she launched into how Padstow folk once rowed out to chase Spanish boats nicking their fish. "We'd bash their ruddy hulls with oars!" Proper storyteller, Madge was, her tales peppered with "blooming idiots" and cackles that turned heads. I bought her a gin, and she quizzed me on London life – "All tube strikes and lattes, eh?" – making me chuckle at how spot-on she was.

Next morning, still buzzing from first-night fish and chips from the van by the quay (crisp batter, mushy peas perfection), I ambled to the bakery on the high street. Enter Derek, the baker with a beard like a Cornish pasty gone feral and hands dusted in flour that could choke a donkey. "Fresh saffron buns, my son?" he boomed, sliding one over gratis. Turns out he's been kneading dough here since Methuselah, and his quirky wisdom flowed like clotted cream. "Life's like a pasty – hot and flaky if you rush it," he winked, sharing how he once swapped loaves for a fishing lesson with a trawlerman neighbour. We chatted about the estuary's moods – calm one minute, feral the next – and he ribbed me gently: "You holiday folk, always chasing sun. We get it three days a year!" I laughed, feeling a right soft southerner, but his warmth made High Cove feel like home already.

By lunch, I'd popped into the seafood shack near the lifeboat station, where I bumped into Tommy, a retired fisherman with tattoos faded like old tattoos on a sailor's arm. Skin like leather from decades hauling pots, he was mending nets and muttering about "they blooming tourists clogging the slipway." But he softened when I asked about his catches. "Crabs the size of hubcaps, back in the day," he grinned, launching into a yarn about a storm where his boat nearly kissed the rocks off Trevone. "Held on by prayer and a prayers' worth of rum!" We swapped stories over a crab sandwich – mine sounding dead posh next to his – and he even sketched a quick map of the best rockpool spots within spitting distance. His gruff charm had me in stitches, especially when he confessed to "borrowing" a rival's buoy once, only for it to wash up in his neighbour's garden.

These encounters – Madge's gin-fueled history lessons, Derek's floury philosophy, Tommy's salty tales – wove right into High Cove's charm. Sat on the verandah that evening, pasty in hand, I had a quiet moment reflecting: in the rush of city life, I forget how these quirky souls ground you, turning a simple arrival into something real. Padstow's heartbeat is its people, and my first impressions? Unbeatable. Can't wait for day two, but that's a tale for another time.
