About Padstow
Pulling up to Exclusive Lodge 3 Bed felt like stumbling into a secret hideaway. Tucked just a stone's throw from the action, this three-bed lodge is the sort of place that screams "cosy getaway" without trying too hard – all wood-beamed charm and sea views that make you forget the world. I dumped my bags, cracked open a window, and there it was: the gentle lap of waves and gulls squawking like they owned the joint. First impressions? Bloody spot on. Spacious enough for my solo self (though it'd sleep a family easy), with a kitchen that begged for a pasty feast and a lounge where you could flop and watch the boats bob about. But honestly, it was the locals who turned arrival into pure gold. No sooner had I locked the car than old Reg shuffled over from next door, pipe in mouth, eyeing me like I'd just landed from Mars. "New 'ere, are ya?" he grunted, in that proper Cornish drawl thick as clotted cream. Turned out Reg is the self-appointed harbour historian, regaling me with tales of smuggling runs from the old days. "Smuggers'd hide the brandy right under the noses of the revenue men," he chuckled, tapping his nose. "Still do, some say – watch yerself at the pub tonight!" I couldn't help but laugh; the man's got stories for days, and his quirky habit of feeding the seagulls bits of bacon rinds had them dive-bombing like kamikazes. Wandering down to the harbour for my first pasty – Rick Stein's influence everywhere, you can't escape it – I bumped into Tina behind the counter at the bakery. She's a force of nature, this one, with a laugh like a foghorn and tattoos of mermaids up her arms. "First time in Padstow, love?" she asked, slathering my pasty with extra butter. We got chatting about the fishing boats chugging out at dawn, and she proper took the mick out of my "touristy" trainers. "Yer need wellies 'ere, duck – tide comes in quick as a fox!" Her banter was spot-on, turning a simple lunch into a masterclass in local lore. Did you know the pilchard wars nearly sank the village economy back in the day? Tina did, and she told it with such gusto, I felt like I'd lived it. Then there was young Jake, the lad from the seafood shack, all freckles and cheeky grin, no more than 20. He was filleting crab claws like a pro, regaling me with how his grandad taught him to spot the best pots. "Tourists come for the posh nosh," he winked, "but real Padstow folk eat it straight off the boat, shells and all." We yarned about the summer regatta – him dreaming of entering his dinghy next year – and his deadpan impression of posh day-trippers slipping on seaweed had me in stitches. "They think it's quaint till the gull sh*ts on 'em!" Chatting with these characters as the sun dipped low over the estuary, I had a proper moment of reflection. Here I was, a city lad used to rushing about, and these quirky souls – Reg with his pipe, Tina's foghorn guffaws, Jake's salty wit – reminded me why you escape to places like this. Padstow's not just postcard pretty; it's alive with proper people who make you feel right at home from the off. That first afternoon at the lodge, sipping tea on the deck, I thought: three days of this? I'm sorted. |
