About Padstow
First impressions? Blimey, this place is a proper gem. The lodge itself is one of those modern wooden beauties, all clean lines and big windows overlooking a quiet garden that screams "relax here with a GandT". It's pet-friendly heaven – Monty immediately claimed the sunny patio as his throne, sniffing every blade of grass like he owned the joint. Inside, it's cosy without being cluttered: three bedrooms done up smartly, a kitchen that could handle a feast, and a lounge with squishy sofas begging for a Netflix binge. I dumped my bags, cracked open a cold one from the fridge (pro tip: stock up en route), and just soaked it in. No chain hotel vibes here – this felt like stumbling into a mate's posh garden shed, upgraded to five-star. But the real magic kicked off when I decided to wander, no map, no plan, just Monty on his lead and my trainers laced up. Padstow's got its famous spots like the harbour and Rick Stein's empire, but I was after the hidden bits you only find by accident. Ten minutes from the lodge, veering off the main drag down a hedgerow-lined path I'd never have noticed otherwise, I stumbled on a tiny pebbled cove called something unpronounceable like "Porth something-or-other". Empty as a pin, save for a couple of seals barking lazily offshore. Sat there with a pasty from a hole-in-the-wall bakery (criminally good, flaky pastry crumbling everywhere), watching the waves, thinking, "This is why we do holidays – to get properly lost." Saturday morning, same drill: coffee on the lodge deck, then another aimless ramble. Got turned around near the estuary and ended up on a footpath snaking through dunes that felt like they'd been airlifted from the Sahara. Bloody brilliant – wildflowers everywhere, skylarks overhead, and not a soul in sight. Monty went feral chasing butterflies, and I plonked down for a brew from my flask, realising I'd wandered into one of those secret spots locals keep schtum about. Back at the lodge by lunch, I fired up the BBQ (gas one, dead easy), grilled some local mackerel I'd nicked from a fishmonger's van – fresh as, straight off the boat – and reflected on how daft it is that we pack itineraries solid back home. Here, getting lost was the itinerary. By Sunday, I'd mapped a mental route to another accidental find: a tucked-away viewpoint over the Camel Estuary, reached via a muddy track I spotted while dodging cyclists. Panoramic views for miles, gulls wheeling about, and a bench that seemed placed just for procrastinators like me. Monty dozed at my feet, and I had one of those gentle moments – staring out, pint in hand from the lodge's well-stocked bar fridge, pondering how these off-the-beaten-path surprises make you feel alive. Padstow's pull is in its layers; the lodge was the perfect base to peel them back, one wrong turn at a time. Packing up that afternoon, I promised myself more "lost" holidays. Exclusive Lodge 3 Bed (Pet) nailed the first impressions – comfy, quiet, and the launchpad for Padstow's best-kept secrets. Can't wait to return and lose myself all over again. |
