About Padstow
I finally made it to Padstow after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive down from Bristol, swearing I'd never pack so much into the boot of my little Fiesta again. It was a three-day jaunt to this cracking spot called Exclusive Lodge 2 Bed, and right from the off, things went a bit pear-shaped. Picture this: I'm humming along the A39, past those rolling Cornish fields, when I realise I've left my phone charger at home. No biggie, I think, until the sat nav starts glitching halfway through the narrow lanes leading into Padstow. Suddenly, I'm that daft tourist blocking a dairy truck because my screen's frozen on "recalculating route." The farmer gives me a proper stare – the kind that says "move it, you pillock" – and I end up doing a three-point turn in a hedge, leaves in my hair and a scraped wing mirror to boot. Laughable now, but at the time, I was proper fuming, heart racing like I'd just run the Padstow Christmas lights switch-on backwards.

By the time I pulled up to the lodge on the edge of town, the sun was dipping low over the Camel Estuary, painting everything golden. Exclusive Lodge 2 Bed is one of those proper gems – a cosy two-bed timber affair tucked into a quiet spot just a short stroll from the harbour. I parked on the gravel drive, still muttering about my navigational fail, and lugged my bags up the steps. The key safe clicked open first go (thank heavens for small mercies), and as I pushed the door, that instant holiday whiff hit me: fresh linen, a hint of sea salt, and something woodsy from the beams overhead. It was love at first step inside.

The open-plan living space is an absolute dream – think plush sofas begging for a collapse, a wood-burning stove all set with kindling (I resisted lighting it straight away, though god knows I needed the calm), and a kitchen that's kitted out better than mine back home. I dumped my bags and cracked open the bifold doors to the decked terrace, where the view straight out to the estuary had me grinning like an idiot. Seagulls wheeling about, boats bobbing gently – it's the sort of scene that makes you forget your wing-mirror woes in about two seconds flat. I brewed a cuppa from the welcome basket (proper thoughtful touch, with local teabags and a note saying "kick back and enjoy"), and plonked myself on the outdoor bench, feet up, watching the light fade.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The bedrooms are snug as a bug – mine had a king-sized bed with the fluffiest pillows, and en-suite with a rainfall shower that I tested immediately (piping hot, no faffing). The second room's got twin beds, perfect if you're with mates or kids. It's all modern-rustic, with underfloor heating that made my chilly toes sing, and those little luxuries like fluffy towels and a Nespresso machine. No expense spared, really. I wandered the deck, spotting the private hot tub bubbling away invitingly – mental note for tomorrow, though after the drive, I half-fancied jumping in clothes and all.

Sat there with my tea going cold, I had a proper moment of reflection. Here I was, knackered from the road rage, yet utterly content in this little haven. Life's too short for sat nav tantrums when places like this exist, isn't it? Padstow's magic seeped in right away – the distant hum of chatter from the harbour, the scent of pasties wafting on the breeze from Stein's or Chough Bakery down the road. I nipped out for fish and chips from a takeaway near the quay (crispy batter, fat chips, pure bliss), and ate them back on the terrace as the stars popped out. That mishap on the lane? Already a funny story. Exclusive Lodge had well and truly won me over – arrival chaos forgotten, replaced by the promise of two more days in paradise. If you're after a bolthole that feels exclusively yours, this is it. Can't wait to go back.
