About Padstow
Nestled in a quiet spot just a short stroll from Padstow's harbour, this place hit me like a warm hug the second I stepped out. It's one of those modern lodges that somehow nails that cosy, "get me a cuppa" vibe—timber cladding, a pitched roof, and a little veranda that screams "park your bum here with a book." My spaniel, Monty, was straight in, tail wagging like a metronome on overdrive, sniffing every corner as if he'd discovered Narnia. Pets welcome? Understatement of the year. There's even a secure garden out back, fenced just high enough to keep the little terror from bolting after every passing seagull. First impressions? Blissful. I dumped my bags in the open-plan living area—plush sofas, a wood burner (not lit yet, but oh, the promise), and a kitchen kitted out with everything from cafetière to that fancy toaster you never use at home. The bedrooms upstairs are snug as a bug: king-sized bed in the master with views over the garden, and a twin for guests (or in my case, Monty's chaotic sprawl). Spotless, too—no dusty corners or wonky doors. I cracked open the bi-fold doors to the decking, plonked myself on a lounger with a flask of tea from the welcome pack, and thought, "This is it. Three days of sod all, and I'm here for it." That first afternoon set the tone perfectly. No grand plans, just a lazy wander down to Padstow's quay—maybe a ten-minute amble, past colourful fishing boats bobbing in the Camel Estuary. The air's thick with that salty tang, and the harbour's alive with locals mending nets and holidaymakers queuing at Stein's for fish and chips. I grabbed a crab sandwich from a stall (fresh as you'll get, flaking apart with one bite), then meandered back without a care. Sat in the garden with Monty chasing his tail, I cracked open my battered copy of The Sea, The Sea—perfect for slowing down, letting the words wash over me like the tide below. Evening rolled in slow and golden. Fired up the BBQ on the private patio (gas, thank god—no faffing with charcoal), grilled some local mackerel from the fishmonger, and ate al fresco while the sun dipped behind the hills. Monty snaffled a sneaky sausage, and I didn't even mind. Inside, the lodge glowed under soft lamps; I flicked on the Smart TV for a bit of Pointless, then curled up by the window with a GandT, watching the world fade. No emails, no deadlines—just the hum of crickets and the odd gull cry. It's funny, innit? We rush about like headless chickens, then a place like this reminds you how daft it all is. Lying there that first night, duvet piled high, Monty snoring beside me, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life's too short not to savour these pockets of nothing—proper nothing, the good kind, where doing bugger all feels like the height of luxury. Here's to more of it. |
