About Padstow
I finally rolled into Padstow after a cracking drive down from the M5, the kids buzzing in the back like they'd mainlined Haribo, and me nursing a minor disaster – I'd forgotten to pack the dog's lead, so poor old Monty spent the last hour of the journey leashed to my belt loop with a makeshift rope from an old scarf. Proper Dad fail, that one. But hey, we made it to the Exclusive 4 Bed Hot Tub (Pet) cottage just as the sun dipped low over the Camel Estuary, painting everything in that golden Cornish light that makes you forget the traffic jams back on the A30.

Pulling up to the place felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked away in a quiet spot on the edge of Padstow – close enough to wander into town but far enough for that proper getaway vibe – it's one of those smart, modern hot tub lodges that look like they've been plucked from a posh catalogue. The exterior's all crisp white render with big windows and a little fenced garden, perfect for Monty to sniff about without bolting towards the beach. I parked on the gravel drive, gravel crunching under the tyres like a satisfying ASMR video, and unloaded the boot while the family piled out, stretching like we'd been on the Trans-Siberian rather than a three-hour jaunt.

First impressions? Blimey, it was spot on for our relaxed family break. Stepping inside, the open-plan living space hit you with this airy, welcoming glow – high ceilings, plush sofas in soft greys, and a telly bigger than our one at home. The kitchen was a dream: gleaming worktops, a massive American-style fridge (already stocked with milk and butter from the owners, bless 'em), and every gadget you could want for knocking up a Full English. I fumbled about making tea while the kids claimed bedrooms – four of 'em, all en-suite, with ours downstairs for easy access with the dog. Ours had this massive king bed that swallowed you whole, and a cheeky little window overlooking the garden where Monty was already digging a crater.

But the real star? That private hot tub out the back, steaming away under a pergola, surrounded by twinkly fairy lights. We cracked it open within minutes of arriving – me, the missus, and the two lads splashing about like otters while Monty watched from the sidelines, head tilted in that confused way dogs do. "Dad, this is better than Center Parcs!" my youngest yelled, and I had to agree. The water was piping hot, bubbles fizzing, and with the evening chill setting in, it was pure bliss. Light chaos ensued when Monty decided he fancied a dip too – ended up with a soggy Labrador draped over the edge, shaking himself like a malfunctioning sprinkler. We howled with laughter, towels flying everywhere.

Wandering out for a first evening stroll, it's maybe a ten-minute dawdle to Padstow harbour, past cute stone cottages and pasties wafting from every corner. We grabbed fish and chips from a takeaway on the quay – proper crispy batter, fat chips, and mushy peas – and scoffed them on a bench watching the fishing boats bob. The air's thick with that salty sea tang, gulls squawking overhead, and the town's buzzing gently with locals and holidaymakers. Back at the cottage, we lit the fire pit in the garden (gas, thank goodness – no faffing with logs), roasted a few marshmallows, and just... breathed. No schedules, no rushing.

Sitting there later, pint in hand, watching the stars pop out over the estuary, I had one of those gentle moments of self-reflection. Life back home's a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines, but here, in this cosy lodge with its hot tub hum and family giggles echoing, it hit me: these simple pleasures – a daft dog mishap, steamy bubbles, chippy supper – are what recharge the batteries. Can't wait to see what the next couple of days bring, but this arrival? Absolute perfection.
