About Padstow
We trundled up the narrow lanes towards the property, hearts lifting as Padstow's postcard perfection unfolded – whitewashed cottages huddled around the estuary, fishing boats bobbing gently, and that salty sea air hitting you like a welcome hug. The cottage sat tucked away in a quiet spot just a short stroll from the high street, all stone walls and flower baskets overflowing with geraniums. Spotting the 'Exclusive 3 Bed Ht (Pet)' sign felt like striking gold; it promised – and delivered – that cosy, upscale escape without the pretension. Fumbling with the key safe (my hands still grubby from branch-gate), we pushed open the door to a wave of warmth and that unmistakable scent of fresh linen and beeswax polish. Monty barrelled in first, tail wagging like a windscreen wiper on full pelt, claiming his spot by the Aga straight away. First impressions? Blown away. The open-plan living area was a dream – squishy sofas in soft greys, a telly bigger than our one at home, and a wood burner already stacked with kindling, begging for an evening crackle. The kitchen gleamed with every gadget you could wish for: Smeg fridge humming quietly, a coffee machine that whispered 'proper brew' rather than instant sludge, and a farmhouse table big enough for lazy breakfasts piled with local clotted cream and scones. I cracked open a pasty from the Harbour Bakery down the road – flaky, steaming, stuffed with proper chunks of steak – and plonked it on a plate while the other half explored upstairs. Three bedrooms, each a haven: the master with a king-sized bed you could get lost in, fluffy pillows piled high, and an en-suite that shouted luxury without shouting at all. The kids' rooms (or in our case, the spare for mates) had crisp white duvets and views peeking over rooftops to the water. Pet-friendly to the core, too – Monty's bed was already set up with treats, no passive-aggressive notices about fur or paw prints. But the real showstopper? That private hot tub out the back, nestled in a sheltered patio with fairy lights strung above and hedges shielding it from prying eyes. After our arrival chaos, sliding into those bubbling jets as the sun dipped low over the Camel Estuary was pure magic. Bubbles fizzing around us, Monty snoring on his blanket nearby, and the faint sound of gulls calling from the harbour. We cracked open a couple of Sharps Doom Bar from the offy on the high street – crisp, malty perfection – and just soaked it all in. Padstow's vibe filtered through: the hum of chatter from the Rick Stein chippy wafting over, bikes whizzing past on the Camel Trail path nearby, and that golden light turning everything hazy. Looking back on that messy arrival, I had a proper moment of self-reflection, pint in hand in the tub. Life's full of potholes and branch-in-the-wheel-arch nonsense, innit? But places like this cottage remind you to shake it off, laugh it out, and dive into the good bits. First impressions sealed it – we'd struck holiday jackpot. Three days stretched ahead, but honestly, that initial hit of cosiness had me hooked from the off. |
