About Padstow
Pulling up to the cottage on that quiet lane just a stone's throw from the harbour, I was chuffed to bits. It's one of those proper stone-built jobbies, all whitewashed walls and a thatched roof that screams "Cornish idyll" without trying too hard. The kids – my two lads, aged 8 and 10 – piled out before I'd even turned off the engine, whooping about the front garden bursting with hydrangeas and that sea-tang in the air. I fumbled the keys from the lockbox (pro tip: check the code twice, unlike yours truly), and in we tumbled, bags and all. First impressions? Blissfully cosy, just as advertised. The open-plan living room-kitchen is the heart of it, with a wood-burner begging for a fire (we didn't light it straight away – too warm, and anyway, the kids were already raiding the welcome basket of local fudge and shortbread). Plump sofas in soft greys, a telly for rainy days (fingers crossed), and those big windows framing views of the rooftops rolling down to the water. Upstairs, the bedrooms are snug as a bug – our double had a massive bed that swallowed me whole, and the lads shared a twin with bunk beds that had them bouncing like kangaroos before I'd unpacked a sock. We dumped the gear and headed straight out for first impressions of Padstow itself – it's only a five-minute wander to the quay, past pasty shops wafting smells that could make a vegan reconsider. Grabbed fish and chips from a takeaway on the harbour wall, the batter crisp as fresh laundry, and perched on the benches watching the fishing boats bob about. The lads chucked pebbles into the estuary, giggling as gulls dive-bombed for scraps. Pure simple pleasure, that – no theme parks, no schedules, just salty air and full tummies. Back at the cottage by late afternoon, the real lodge-life chaos kicked in, and I loved every mad minute. The boys discovered the quirky board games stashed in a cupboard – a dusty old Jenga set that ended in a tower-topple and me yelling "Timber!" like a prat. I pottered in the kitchen, brewing a proper cuppa (milk from the local dairy, natch) while attempting to assemble a paddling pool for the garden. Cue water everywhere, me soaked to the knees, and the kids hosing each other down in hysterics. "Dad, you're rubbish at this!" one shouted, and fair play, he wasn't wrong. It's those daft moments that make a family break, innit? As the sun dipped behind the hills, painting the sky all pink and gold, I sat on the patio with a cold cider from the fridge, listening to the distant clink of quay-side glasses. Padstow's got that magic – boats creaking, laughter floating up from the pub down the lane, and our little retreat feeling like a hug. Made me reflect, quietly, on how we rush about so much at home, chasing "more" when this – salty chips, soggy paddling pools, and a cosy nook to crash in – is the stuff that sticks. First day in, and already I didn't want to leave. Here's to more of the same tomorrow. |
