About Padstow
Pulling up to the cottage that first afternoon, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked into this brilliant little holiday park vibe, it's one of those stone-fronted beauties with a proper welcome mat and sea glimpses peeking through the garden hedge. The hosts had left a basket of local treats—fresh scones, clotted cream, and a note saying "Tuck in!"—which I demolished straight away with a cuppa, still smelling faintly of vintage dairy in my car. First impressions? Cosy as a pasty fresh from the oven, with a kitchen that screamed "cook up a storm" and a lounge begging for post-feast naps. Right, food first, always. We dumped the bags and legged it to the village—it's a hop away, all harbour views and pasty shops lining the streets. Padstow's a proper feast for the senses, innit? I hit Stein's Fish and Chips on the quayside for lunch, queueing with sandy-footed families for the crispiest batter and plumpest cod. Mine came wrapped in paper, dripping with vinegar mushy peas on the side—pure bliss, eaten on a bench overlooking the boats bobbing in the Camel Estuary. The portions are massive; I waddled back to the cottage stuffed, vowing to walk it off later. Spoiler: I didn't. Afternoon was market time at Padstow's harbour market—stalls groaning under fresh crab, lobster, and those fat Padstow oysters that locals swear by. I haggled (badly) for a punnet of mussels and some smoked mackerel, plus a wedge of crumbly Cornish Yarg cheese wrapped in nettle leaves. Back at the cottage, I fancied myself a MasterChef, firing up the hob for a seafood feast. Big mistake. I'd grabbed garlic, chillies, and cream from the village Co-op, but my mussels turned into a gritty disaster—half shells popping open late, the sauce splitting like my dreams of cordon bleu. Laughed my socks off scraping it into the bin, then salvaged it with buttered bread and a cheeky pasty from the freezer (bless the cottage stock). Paired with a crisp Cornish Chenin Blanc from the offie, it was edible chaos. Self-reflection moment: maybe I'm better at eating than cooking, but there's joy in the faff, right? Reminded me to slow down and savour the slip-ups. Evening called for the pub crawl—Padstow's got gems like The Shipwrights, a proper boozer with beams and harbour views. We squeezed in for pints of Sharps Doom Bar, golden and malty, followed by platters of local charcuterie and crab claws that cracked like fireworks. The landlady recommended their specials: a rich fish stew with saffron aioli that had us moaning in delight. Chips on the side, obviously—thick-cut, sea-salted perfection. Staggered back under streetlamps, bellies full, plotting tomorrow's breakfast at Chough's cider bar bakery. Their bacon butties on sourdough? Life-changing. That first day at Cornish Holiday at Atlantic Bays hooked me proper—food weaving through every laugh and mishap, turning a simple stay into a tastebud holiday. Can't wait to return for round two. |
