About Padstow
I finally made it to Padstow after a faffing drive down from Bristol, the SatNav deciding to play silly buggers by sending me on a detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel past hedges taller than me. Spilled my cuppa all over the passenger seat – classic me, innit? But as I pulled up to the 2 Bed Lodge just on the edge of town, that little mishap melted away. Tucked in a quiet spot with sea glimpses peeking through the trees, it looked proper cosy, like the sort of place you'd stumble into in a Sunday night telly drama.

No sooner had I lugged my bags through the door – noting the welcoming log burner and those comfy-looking sofas begging for a collapse – than I wandered out for a nose around. Padstow's got that magical pull, hasn't it? First character I clocked was old Reg, the chap next door tinkering with his fishing boat trailer. Must've been in his seventies, with a beard like a Brillo pad and hands like weathered oak. "New 'ere, are ya?" he bellowed, not waiting for an answer. "Mind the gulls – they'll nick your chips quicker than a seagull on steroids!" We got chatting about his glory days hauling pots for crab, how the sea's "gone all moody these days with the climate bollocks." Laughed my socks off when he reckoned the best pasty in town was from his mate's bakery, not the famous ones everyone bangs on about. "Ours has proper beef, not that tourist tat," he winked, thrusting a dog-eared map at me with scribbles marking his secret spots.

Emboldened, I ambled into the heart of Padstow, past the harbour where boats bobbed like they'd had one too many. There was Maggie at the pasty shop counter, a firecracker in her fifties with an apron that had seen better days. "First time? You'll be back, love – it's the curse of the place!" She regaled me with tales of the fishing fleet's wild nights back in the '80s, when Padstow turned into a floating party after the catch came in. "Me and the girls would dance on the quay till dawn, dodging the coppers," she cackled, sliding over a steak pasty so hot it nearly took my fingerprints off. Her laugh was infectious, and before I knew it, I was spilling about my SatNav disaster, which had her in stitches. "That's nothing – last week a Yank drove straight into Trev's wall chasing a cream tea mirage!"

Further along the harbour wall, I bumped into young Ollie, a surfer lad in his twenties with sun-bleached hair and a wetsuit slung over his shoulder. He was supping a pint outside the pub, feet up on a bollard. "Lodge life treating ya alright?" he asked, spotting my keys. Turned out he's the local surf instructor, knows every ripple from here to the bay. We yarned about the quirky Padstow characters – like Madge the ice cream lady who once chased a shoplifter with a cornet scoop – and how the town's "proper tight-knit, like a family reunion gone right." Ollie's got this deadpan humour: "Tourists come for the pasties, stay for the gossip. You're halfway there already!" He even tipped me off on the best beach cove for a quiet paddle, all within a short stroll.

Sitting on a bench later, munching that pasty with the sun dipping low, I had a proper moment of reflection. In the rush of city life, I forget how these random chats with proper locals recharge the batteries. No agendas, just stories swapped like old pennies. Reg's gruff wisdom, Maggie's spark, Ollie's easy vibe – they made my first hours here feel like slipping into a favourite jumper. The lodge was ace, mind, with its sea views from the patio calling for a beer at dusk. But it's these Padstow folk that hooked me straight away. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but if it's more characters like that, I'll be sorted.
