About North Devon
Pulling up to Wrinklewood Premier around teatime on that first Friday, I was gobsmacked. Tucked into a peaceful spot just outside Ilfracombe, this premier lodge looked like it had been plucked from a chocolate box—smart wooden cladding, a veranda begging for a GandT, and those massive windows framing the rolling Devon countryside. It's one of those hot tub lodges that scream "relaxation," and after my rural detour, I was ready to melt into it. The owners greeted me with a warm welcome, handed over the keys, and pointed out the lay of the land: private garden, that bubbling hot tub, and views that stretched to the distant cliffs without a hint of traffic noise. First impressions? Pure bliss. I dumped my bag, cracked open a bottle of local Devon cider (picked up from a farm shop en route), and flopped onto the plush sofa in the open-plan living area. The place is cosier than a sheep's woolly jumper—underfloor heating, a wood-burning stove ready for a lazy evening, and a kitchen stocked with all the bits you need for scoffing without faffing about. No grand plans for this holiday; I was here to do bugger all, and Wrinklewood made it effortless. That first afternoon, I pottered in the private garden, a sun-trap haven with loungers and bird feeders drawing in robins and finches. I cracked open my book—a battered copy of a Poldark novel, perfect for the moorsy vibes—and let the hours slip by. The joy of it! No emails pinging, no deadlines, just the rustle of leaves and the faint crash of waves from nearby Hillsborough. Dinner was simple: local pasties from Ilfracombe's high street (a five-minute amble away), devoured on the veranda as the sun dipped low, painting the sky in pinks and oranges. I chuckled to myself thinking how I'd once crammed a city break into non-stop sightseeing—blimey, what a mug. Evening brought the hot tub. Slipping in as dusk fell, bubbles churning around me, I gazed at the stars popping out over the dark silhouette of the coast. It's moments like that when you realise how knackered modern life leaves you. I've always been a doer—rushing from meeting to gym to pub—but here, sinking into that steaming water, I had a proper think. Why do we fill every second? Slowing down isn't lazy; it's bloody essential. A gentle nudge from the universe, courtesy of Wrinklewood. The next morning—my second day—dawned misty and magical. I brewed a coffee, wrapped up in the lodge's fluffy robe, and read on the swing seat in the garden till the fog burned off. A leisurely wander to Chambercombe Beach (practically on the doorstep) for a bit of pebble-skipping and sea-gazing, then back for lunch: cheese on toast, feet up, watching the world go by. Afternoon? More book, a siesta on the king-sized bed with its telly for background noise if needed, and another hot tub dip. Evenings blurred into stargazing and the odd episode of something daft on Netflix, with the stove crackling away. By day three, I'd mastered the art of nowt. A slow stroll along the Tunnels Beaches path—those Victorian wonders carved into the cliffs, just a hop away—then home to the lodge for tea and scones from a nearby café. No hikes, no adventures, just the sheer delight of lingering. Wrinklewood Premier isn't about ticking boxes; it's a hug for your soul, reminding you that joy hides in the quiet. I drove away recharged, already plotting a return. If you're knackered from life, book it—you'll thank me. |
