About North Devon
I finally made it to The Retreat in Barnstaple after what felt like the scenic route from hell—well, not hell exactly, just a cheeky little detour involving a wrong turn onto a single-track lane that had me white-knuckling the steering wheel past a herd of cows eyeing me like I was the intruder. Picture this: me, my other half, and our two sprogs, ages eight and five, crammed into the car with enough snacks to siege a castle, all because Google Maps decided to play silly buggers near Braunton. We laughed it off over emergency crisps, but honestly, arriving at The Retreat felt like stumbling into a hug from North Devon itself.

Pulling up to the place just after lunch on a drizzly Friday, I was proper chuffed. Tucked away in a peaceful spot on the edge of Barnstaple, it's this cosy pet-friendly lodge that screams "relax, you've earned it." The garden's a riot of wildflowers and buzzing bees, with a private hot tub bubbling away like it knew we needed it after that drive. We tumbled out of the car, kids shrieking with delight at the sight of the fenced play area—complete with swings and a slide that looked begging for some serious sliding action. "Mum, can we go NOW?" yelled little Finn, already halfway up the climbing frame. Aye, lad, knock yourself out.

Stepping inside was pure lodge life magic. The open-plan living space is all warm wood and squishy sofas, with a wood-burning stove that hadn't even been lit yet but promised evenings of toasty toes. The kitchen's kitted out like a telly chef's dream—big fridge, oven gleaming, and a dining table big enough for our ragtag family feasts. I dumped the bags and cracked open a cupboard to find tea towels folded neater than my linen drawer at home, which is saying something since mine's a perpetual laundry warzone. Light streams in from the bifold doors, framing views of the garden where the hot tub sits like a steamy invitation. First impressions? Blissfully unpretentious. No stuffy hotel vibes here—just a home away from home with that North Devon charm.

We wasted no time settling in. The kids claimed the two twin rooms upstairs, all cosy with their en-suite showers and views over the greenery. Me and the missus bagged the master with its kingsize bed and that same lush outlook—proper romantic, if you ignore the Lego bricks we'd soon be stepping on. Chaos kicked off almost immediately when Isla decided the hot tub was her personal paddling pool pre-warm-up. "It's not a bath!" I hollered, fishing out her soggy socks while trying not to snigger. Classic family break antics, innit? We fired up the BBQ (yes, there's one right there in the garden) and rustled up sausages from the local Barnstaple market I'd nipped to on the way—juicy, smokey beauties that tasted of summer, even under grey skies.

As the afternoon sun peeked through, we lounged on the patio, sipping tea from the complimentary welcome pack (cheers for the milk and biccies, Snaptrip). The hot tub called, and oh boy, sinking into those jets after the drive was heaven. Bubbles massaging away the week's stresses, kids splashing nearby, husband cracking dad jokes about my navigation skills. "Next time, love, we're bringing a sat-nav with a posh voice." I rolled my eyes, but truth be told, that minor mishap made the arrival all the sweeter.

Sitting there, watching the kids chase each other round the garden, I had one of those quiet moments. Life's mad rush—work emails, school runs, the endless juggle—fades in places like this. The Retreat isn't flashy; it's real, with its simple pleasures: fresh air, family giggles, and no agenda beyond chilling. First impressions sealed it—this three-day jaunt was already shaping up to be the reset we needed. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but right now, this is spot on.
