About North Devon
I’d barely made it out of the M5 when the first hiccup hit – a rogue seagull decided my windscreen was its personal canvas, splattering it with what looked like Jackson Pollock’s rejected masterpiece. Laughing to myself, I pulled over near Braunton to give it a half-hearted wipe with a service station napkin, thinking, “Welcome to North Devon, where even the birds have a sense of humour.” It was the perfect start to my three-day jaunt to Swanpool, a cosy lodge tucked away in Great Field near Braunton. I’d booked it on a whim for that proper off-grid vibe, and as I trundled down those narrow Devon lanes, sat-nav glitching like it was auditioning for a comedy sketch, I couldn’t help but grin. Getting lost? Already ticking that box.

Pulling up to Swanpool after what felt like an accidental scenic tour of every farm track in the parish, I was smitten straight away. It’s one of those hidden gems you stumble upon – a smart wooden lodge nestled in a quiet corner of the park, with verandas front and back that scream “sit here with a cuppa and pretend you own the place.” The sun was dipping low, casting that golden glow over the surrounding fields, and the air hummed with the sort of peace you forget exists. No thumping bass from nearby holidaymakers, just birdsong and the distant moo of cows. I dumped my bags, cracked open a cold beer from the fridge (fully stocked, bless the cleaners), and flopped onto the decking chair. First impressions? Blissful isolation, the kind that makes city stress evaporate like morning mist.

But the real magic kicked in when I decided to explore on foot, ditching the car for a wander. North Devon’s got this knack for rewarding the aimlessly curious, and within minutes, I’d veered off the main path into what I later learned was Saunton Burrows territory – not the touristy bit, but a tucked-away stretch of dunes that felt like my private discovery. The sand was soft underfoot, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and I spotted a lone seal pup bobbing in the shallows, probably wondering what this daft human was doing there. I chuckled, imagining it reporting back to its mates: “Spotted a bloke taking selfies with marram grass.” Pure accident, that detour – my phone had zero signal, so no maps, just me and the coastal path winding like it had a mind of its own.

Wandering further, I stumbled upon a proper hidden gem: a secluded cove just shy of a mile from Swanpool, where the cliffs dip into pebbly beaches that barely see a footprint. No signs, no crowds – just the crash of waves on black rocks and rock pools teeming with crabs scuttling like tiny commandos. I spent ages poking about, finding sea glass smoothed by years of tides, and even a bit of driftwood that looked artisan-crafted. Sat there with my thermos of tea, legs dangling over the edge, I had one of those gentle moments of reflection. Life back home’s all rush and deadlines, isn’t it? But here, getting gloriously lost reminded me how simple joys – like chasing shadows across dunes or unearthing a forgotten beach – recharge the soul. Felt a bit daft admitting it to myself, but hey, that’s the power of these off-the-beaten-track spots.

Back at the lodge by dusk, the hot tub was bubbling invitingly under the stars – another serendipitous find when I noticed the switch hidden behind a panel. Soaking away the day’s salt and sand, I toasted to serendipity. Swanpool’s first impressions? A launchpad for accidental adventures in North Devon’s secret corners, where the best bits are the ones you weren’t meant to find. Can’t wait to “get lost” again.
