About North Devon
I finally made it to Rafters in Georgeham after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Bristol. It was mid-October, that crisp cusp of autumn when the North Devon lanes are carpeted in golden leaves and the air smells like damp earth and woodsmoke. I'd set off full of beans, playlist blasting some indie folk to match the mood, but about halfway through, I managed to splatter my windscreen with a rogue squirt from my water bottle – right in the middle of a narrow twisty road near Braunton. Cue a comedy stop, me flailing with a tissue while swearing under my breath, convinced every passing tractor was judging me. Classic me, turning a simple journey into a sitcom moment.

By the time I pulled up to Rafters, the late afternoon light was that soft, slanting gold you only get in autumn, filtering through the trees and making the thatched cottage look like something out of a Beatrix Potter story. Tucked away in a quiet spot just outside Georgeham, it's the sort of place that whispers "cosy hideaway" – low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove begging to be lit, and those big windows framing the rolling Devon fields. First impressions? Pure magic. The season had worked its charm already; the garden was a riot of fading hydrangeas in rusty pinks and the air hummed with that post-harvest hush, no mid-summer crowds to spoil it.

I dumped my bags and headed straight out for a wander, boots crunching on fallen leaves. Georgeham village is a hop away – all honey-stone cottages and a pub that serves a cracking pint. But it was the autumnal vibe that stole the show: misty mornings rolling in from the coast, just a couple of miles over to Croyde Bay, where the sea was a moody slate grey, waves crashing with that invigorating roar. I nipped down there on arrival day, the wind whipping my scarf about like a demented kite. No bronzed surfers dominating the beach this time of year – just a handful of dog-walkers and me, grinning like an idiot as spray misted my face. The chill bit just enough to make you feel alive, without the summer scorch.

Back at Rafters, I cracked open the welcome pack – local apple juice, still fizzy from the press, and a wedge of Devon cheese that was pure comfort food for the soul. Lighting the fire was a highlight; flames dancing as the October dusk closed in early, turning the sitting room into a glowing cocoon. I sprawled on the sofa with a cuppa, gazing out at the garden where the last blackberries clung stubbornly to the hedges. It's funny how the season shifts everything – in high summer, this spot might buzz with barbecues and day-trippers from Woolacombe, but now it's introspective, like the land's exhaling after months of frenzy.

That first evening, sipping cider by the hearth, I had a proper moment of reflection. Work's been manic lately, deadlines piling up like so many sodden leaves, and I'd been ploughing on autopilot. But here, with the crackle of logs and the faint hoot of an owl outside, it hit me: sometimes you need this seasonal slowdown to remember why you bother with holidays at all. No grand adventures planned – just me, the cottage, and the gentle unfurling of autumn. The next couple of days stretched ahead like a promise, shaped entirely by this golden, fleeting time of year. Rafters felt like the perfect perch to watch it all unfold.
