About North Devon
I finally made it to Ocean Tide Villa 2 in Woolacombe after what felt like the most faffing about journey ever. We'd set off from Bristol early Saturday morning, me, my partner Sarah, and our daft Labrador, Monty, who was already vibrating with excitement in the back seat. North Devon's roads are brilliant for a scenic drive—those twisty lanes hugging the cliffs with glimpses of the Atlantic sparkling below—but today they conspired against us. About five miles out from Mortehoe, just as we crested a hill with Woolacombe Bay coming into view, Monty decided it was the perfect moment to hurl up his breakfast all over the boot. Cue me screeching to a halt on a verge narrower than a supermodel's waist, Sarah wielding wet wipes like a ninja, and Monty looking utterly unrepentant with that innocent doggy grin. "Brilliant start," I muttered, wiping paw prints off the spare tyre while trying not to topple into a bramble bush. Light humour in the chaos, eh? Nothing says holiday like emergency car valet service with a sea view.

By the time we rolled up to the villa around lunchtime, we were knackered but giggling about our "welcome to Devon" mishap. Ocean Tide Villa 2 sits tucked away in a quiet spot just a short stroll from Woolacombe's sandy expanse—proper pet-friendly paradise, as advertised. Pulling into the drive, I clocked the classic seaside cottage vibe straight away: whitewashed walls glowing under the pale March sun, a sturdy slate roof that looked like it'd weathered a few gales, and those big windows promising uninterrupted ocean gazes. Monty bounded out first, nose twitching at the salty air, while we hauled our bags up the path lined with hardy coastal shrubs. The key turned smoothly in the lock—no faff there, thank goodness—and we stepped into a world that instantly melted away the morning's mess.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The open-plan living space hit you like a warm hug: cosy sofas piled with cushions in soft blues and greys, a wood burner ready for cosier evenings (though we didn't need it yet), and a telly big enough for footie without squinting. The kitchen was a dream—shiny hob, a proper farmhouse table for brekkies, and even a jug of fresh milk in the fridge, which felt like the owners knew we'd arrive frazzled. Sarah made a beeline for the sea-view window, gasping at the panorama: Woolacombe Beach stretching out below, waves curling in like they were showing off, with Baggy Point's rugged cliffs framing it all. "This is unreal," she said, and I had to agree. Monty, meanwhile, claimed the fluffy rug by the patio doors as his throne, tail thumping like a drum.

We dumped the bags and headed straight out for a nose around—no unpacking faff on day one. The villa's garden terrace was the star: fenced just right for Monty to mooch about safely, with benches begging for cups of tea while watching surfers dot the waves. A quick five-minute wander down to the beach (past a couple of other holiday lets that looked equally inviting) and we were kicking off shoes on the golden sand. Woolacombe's that perfect North Devon mix—wide, clean beach with dunes whispering in the breeze, families building sandcastles, and hardy dog-walkers like us dodging the odd incoming tide. Monty chased seaweed like it was prey, and I couldn't help a chuckle at how he'd gone from car-spewer to beach king in under an hour. We grabbed fish and chips from a beachside van—proper crispy batter, mushy peas on the side—and plonked on the sand, salt spray in our hair, feeling the stress evaporate.

As the sun dipped lower, painting the sky in pinks over the lighthouse at Morte Point, we ambled back to the villa. That first afternoon chat over tea on the terrace was pure magic: waves crashing faintly, gulls wheeling overhead, and Monty snoring contentedly. Sat there, feet up, I had a quiet moment of reflection—life's little mishaps, like Monty's technicolour yawn, remind you it's the unexpected that sticks. Here at Ocean Tide Villa 2, arriving in a flap only made the welcome sweeter. First impressions don't get much better than this slice of coastal bliss. Can't wait for day two.
