About North Devon
Pulling up to the place just before lunch on a drizzly Friday, I was knackered but buzzing. No.8 The Vista sits in Willingcott, tucked into a peaceful holiday park with that classic North Devon vibe—close enough to hear the waves crashing at Woolacombe Beach but far enough to feel like your own little world. It's one of those dog-friendly lodges, all cosy and contemporary, with a veranda that screams "park your bum here and stare at the sea." I unloaded in the spitting rain, arms full of bags, and the first thing that hit me was the view. Golden sands stretching out below, the Atlantic doing its dramatic roll-in thing, and Morte Point poking up like a rugged old mate in the distance. Blimey, I thought, this is exactly what I needed. Stepping inside, it was love at first sight. The open-plan living space is proper inviting—plump sofas begging to be sunk into, a wood-burning stove (though I didn't light it yet, saving that treat), and a kitchen kitted out with everything from cafetière to toaster. I dumped my stuff, brewed a proper cuppa in one of their mugs (far nicer than my lost one), and flopped onto the sofa with my book. The joy of doing bugger all kicked in immediately. No itinerary, no alarms—just the sound of gulls and the odd rumble of surf. First impressions? This place is built for slowing right down. That afternoon, I wandered out to the garden area, a shared green space with the other lodges but feeling utterly private. Picnic bench, a bit of lawn, and those unbeatable vistas over Woolacombe Bay. I sat there for hours, feet up, watching families with dogs chasing sticks down on the beach. Light breeze, cup of tea going cold—pure bliss. Nipped down the path for a gentle mooch along the cliffs, no more than a ten-minute stroll to the beach. Woolacombe's sands are legendary, wide and clean, with surfers bobbing about like seals. I didn't even bother with wellies; just padded along the water's edge, letting the chilly waves tickle my toes, picking up a few bits of driftwood. Back at the lodge by golden hour, I cracked open a local Devon cider from the fridge (they stock the basics, bless 'em) and watched the sun dip behind the headland. No rush, no plans—just that deep, contented sigh you only get when life's pace matches the tide. Saturday morning was more of the same lazy magic. Woke late to birdsong, made porridge with a view, then retreated to the veranda with my novel. The garden became my kingdom—reading, dozing, maybe stretching my legs for another slow wander to the beach café for a bacon sarnie. It's funny how doing so little feels like achieving something massive. No hikes, no adventures, just breathing in the salt air and letting the world turn without me. One moment had me reflecting, sat there with my book forgotten: I've been rushing about work like a headless chicken lately, haven't I? This—simple, seaside sloth—is what recharges the batteries. No.8 The Vista nails it; it's a hug in lodge form. By Sunday checkout, I was already plotting a return. First impressions don't get much better—this spot in North Devon is my new happy place for switching off and savouring the small stuff. If you're after joy in doing nowt, book it. You won't regret it. |
