About North Devon
But oh, mate, the moment I pulled up outside No. 3 The Vista, all that chaos melted away. Perched right on Willingcott's edge, this place is pure North Devon magic – a chic little dog-friendly cottage with those massive panoramic windows that make you gasp before you've even unlocked the door. I fumbled the key code with muddy fingers (classic me), but stepping inside? Blimey, it was like the universe saying, "Sorry about the sheep detour, here's your reward." The open-plan living space is all light and airy, with a cracking wood-burning stove begging for a cosy evening, and a kitchen kitted out better than my own at home – posh coffee machine and all. I dumped my bags and beelined for the bifold doors, flinging them open to that jaw-dropping sea view. Woolacombe Bay stretched out below, waves crashing on golden sands, with the headland nodding hello in the distance. It was one of those moments where you just stand there, tea in hand, thinking, "How did I luck into this?" First impressions? Spot on. The terrace is an absolute dream – fenced for dogs, with outdoor furniture screaming lazy afternoons supping a cold one while watching surfers carve up the Atlantic. Mine, Poppy, went mental sniffing every blade of grass, tail wagging like she'd won the lottery. I chuckled to myself, remembering how I'd nearly binned the trip after that farmgate fiasco, but here we were, wind in our hair, the salty tang of the sea whipping around us. Wandered down the short path from the cottage – it's literally minutes from Willingcott Beach – and dipped my toes in the surf. Chilly as owt, but invigorating, with families building sandcastles and dog walkers ambling along. No crowds, just that proper North Devon vibe: rugged cliffs, endless sky, and a sense of space you forget exists. Popped back for a brew, and that's when the self-reflection hit, gentle as the incoming tide. Sat on that terrace, staring out at the lighthouse on Baggy Point, I realised I'd been proper wound up lately – work stress, the usual grind. This vista, though? It's a reset button. No signals faffing about up here (bliss), just me, the sea, and a moment to breathe. Laughed at my earlier mishap – that sheep probably reckoned I was the daft one – and felt grateful for the nudge it gave me to slow down. As the sun dipped low, painting the bay in pinks and oranges, I cracked open a pasty from the village shop (greasy, glorious, and authentically Devonian) and toasted my first evening. No. 3 The Vista isn't just a holiday let; it's a front-row seat to paradise, turning arrival pandemonium into instant "ahh" territory. If you're pondering North Devon, book it – sheep detours optional. |
