About North Devon
First impressions? Blimey, what a hidden gem. Tucked away down a quiet lane off the beaten track, this little stone cottage felt like stumbling upon a secret clubhouse. The owner, a cheery local chap, handed over the keys with a nod to the woodburner and a warning about the "cheeky badgers" that rustle about at night. Inside, it was all low beams, squishy sofas, and a kitchen that screamed "rustic charm"—think Aga vibes without the faff of lighting it. I dumped my bags, cracked open a tin of beans for supper (posh holiday, this), and flopped by the window overlooking the wild garden. That's when the magic hit: the utter peace. No motorway hum, no neighbourly chit-chat, just birdsong and the distant moo of cows. It was like the world had exhaled. Keen to explore before dark, I grabbed my wellies and headed out on foot—no map, no plan, just the pull of those off-the-beaten-path lanes. North Devon's got this knack for rewarding the wanderer, and High Bickington delivered straight away. Barely half a mile from the cottage, I veered off the main track onto a footpath that wasn't on any app. It led me through a blooming meadow to a forgotten dew pond, shimmering like a mirror amid buttercups. Sat there with a brew from my flask, watching dragonflies dart about—pure bliss. Felt a proper moment of self-reflection then: back home, I'm always rushing, phone in hand, plotting the next thing. Here, getting lost forced me to just... be. No signal half the time, which was a blessing in disguise. Day two dawned misty, and I was off again, cycling the cottage's rusty bike down unmarked droves. Stumbled on a pocket of ancient woodland maybe a couple of miles away—gnarled oaks dripping with lichen, bluebells carpeting the floor even in summer's edge. It was one of those accidental finds that makes you grin like an idiot: a babbling brook perfect for paddling, ferns tall as me, and zero other souls. Picnicked on pasties from the village shop (proper Cornish jobbies, flaky and steaming), toes in the water, chuckling at how I'd never have clocked this without ditching the A-roads. Lunch turned into a lazy afternoon tracing hedgerows to a wildflower meadow buzzing with bees—hidden paradise, right under my nose. By evening, back at Little Silver Leaf, I lit the woodburner and reflected on the day's detours. That insignificant satnav blunder on arrival? Best thing that happened. It primed me for the real joy: unearthing North Devon's quiet corners, the thrill of lanes that lead nowhere important but everywhere lovely. Three days in, and I hadn't scratched the surface—next time, more getting lost. If you're after a bolthole that whispers "slow down," this is it. Bloody brilliant. |
