About North Devon
I’ll never forget the drive to Larkstone Elegance in Ilfracombe last autumn – that crisp October weekend when North Devon wrapped itself in a golden haze, turning every twisty lane into a postcard. I’d set off from Bristol early, windows down to catch the first nip of chill, but about halfway there, near Braunton, I had a proper daft mishap: my sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and directed me straight into a muddy farm track. There I was, splattered in Devon dirt, laughing at myself as I reversed out, thinking, “Well, that’s one way to arrive fashionably late and filthy.” It was the perfect start to a three-day jaunt, reminding me how autumn’s cheeky unpredictability keeps things lively.

Pulling up to the cottage just before lunch, the seasonal magic hit me full force. Larkstone Elegance sits perched on a quiet hillside overlooking the wild Atlantic, and in October, it’s like the whole of North Devon is auditioning for a Bruegel painting. The leaves on the nearby woods were a riot of amber and rust, fluttering down in the brisk breeze, while the sea below churned with those moody grey waves that make you feel properly alive. No summer crowds here – just the hush of off-season peace, broken only by the occasional gull’s cry. I parked up, grabbed my bags, and stepped inside, already buzzing from the salty air that carried hints of woodsmoke from somewhere down in the village.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The cottage door creaked open to a cosy lounge with a wood-burning stove begging to be lit, its flames flickering against the gloaming light filtering through sash windows. Autumn sunsets come early in these parts, painting the room in soft oranges that danced on the exposed stone walls. I dumped my stuff and brewed a proper cuppa – Tetley, naturally – sinking into the plush sofa with a sigh. Outside, the garden sloped gently towards the cliffs, wildflowers gone to seed but still nodding in the wind, and I could just make out the frothy tops of waves crashing on the rocks below. It felt like the place was whispering, “Settle in, mate, we’ve got stories to tell.”

That first afternoon, I wandered the immediate paths around the cottage – nothing strenuous, mind, as the autumn chill nipped at my ears and promised rain later. The air was thick with that earthy petrichor scent, leaves crunching underfoot like nature’s own crisps. I chuckled to myself spotting a squirrel hoarding nuts with comedic urgency, as if winter was chasing it. Popping down to the local shop in Ilfracombe’s harbour area, a mere five-minute drive, I stocked up on pasties and a bottle of local cider – the kind that warms you from the inside out. Back at the cottage, I lit the stove, its crackle a perfect antidote to the fading light, and tucked into my feast while watching the dusk settle over the bay. No telly needed; the view was the show, with fishing boats bobbing like toys on the swelling tide.

As evening drew in, that gentle self-reflection crept up on me. Sat there with the fire popping and the wind rattling the panes, I pondered how autumn strips things back – no frantic beach days or ice creams, just space to breathe. It’s a season that mirrors your own quiet patches, doesn’t it? Makes you grateful for simple joys like a roaring fire and a cracking view. Larkstone Elegance nailed that vibe spot-on; it wasn’t just a stay, it was a hug from North Devon in its most honest, windswept guise. By bedtime, wrapped in quilts against the deepening chill, I was already plotting tomorrow’s cliff walks – but that first day? Pure, seasonal bliss.
