About North Devon
The satnav, bless it, decided to take me on a scenic detour through Braunton Burrows – all those windy lanes flanked by hedgerows dripping with rain. North Devon's got that proper wild charm, hasn't it? Rolling hills giving way to glimpses of the sea, the air thick with that salty tang even through the car vents. I arrived at the cabin just as the afternoon light was turning golden, pulling up outside this quirky little beach hut perched right on the edge of the dunes, mere steps from Ilfracombe's sandy stretch. Driftwood Beach Cabin – the name's spot on, with its weathered wooden cladding blending into the landscape like it's grown there. Stumbling out, still picking gummy bears from my jeans, I fumbled the key safe code (third time lucky, naturally). The door swung open to this cosy nook that hit me like a warm hug. Inside, it's all low-beamed ceilings, a cracking little wood burner already set with kindling, and a kitchenette kitted out with everything you'd need for a fry-up. The sofa faced a massive window overlooking the beach – waves crashing, gulls wheeling about, and not a soul in sight. I dumped my bags and just stood there, gobsmacked. After the drive's chaos, it was pure bliss. Brewed a cuppa straight away, mug in hand, and flopped onto the cushions watching the tide roll in. First impressions? Magic. Stepping out onto the decking – which feels like it's floating on the sand – the views are mental. Tunnels Beaches just down the way, with its tidal pools and that Victorian vibe, but from here it's all about the untamed shoreline. I wandered down in my wellies, the mishap-flecked ones, and paddled at the water's edge. The sea was that bracing North Atlantic chill, turning my toes numb in seconds, but I couldn't stop grinning. A few locals with dogs nodded hello; it's that friendly Devon way. Spotted a seal bobbing offshore – or was it driftwood? Who cares, it was brilliant. As the sun dipped, painting the sky in those pinks and oranges you only get by the coast, I lit the burner and cracked open a tin of sardines on toast. Simple, innit? Sitting there, flames crackling, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home's all rush and screens, but here, arriving in a flap and landing in this gem, it hit me: sometimes the messiest starts lead to the best resets. Driftwood Beach Cabin's got that effortless pull – unpretentious, right on the beach, and already feeling like my little escape pod. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but blimey, what a cracking first afternoon. |
