About North Devon
I finally made it to Cairnwood after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M5. We'd piled into the car in Bristol with the kids buzzing like they'd mainlined Ribena, maps on laps (who uses those anymore?), and me at the wheel promising a swift two-hour jaunt to Ilfracombe. But no, some numpty in a white van decided to play dodgems on the A39, clipping our wing mirror just past Barnstaple. Nothing major – a bit of plastic flapping like a startled pigeon – but it had us pulling over at a layby for a tense five minutes of duct tape and dad swearing under his breath. The kids thought it was hilarious, dubbing it "Pigeon-gate". Lesson learned: never trust Google Maps on a bank holiday.

By the time we trundled into Ilfracombe, the sun was dipping low over the Bristol Channel, painting those classic North Devon hills in that golden light you can't fake. Cairnwood sits tucked away in a quiet spot just off the main drag, close enough to hear the sea but far enough to feel like your own little kingdom. Spotting the cottage was a relief – this cosy stone lodge with its pitched roof and flower baskets dripping geraniums, looking every bit the postcard-perfect Devon hideaway. We parked on the gravel drive, crunching under the tyres, and the kids bolted out before I'd even turned off the engine, yelling about exploring the garden.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first creak. Pushing open the front door – which stuck a tad, classic cottage charm – we were hit with that woody, welcoming scent of a lived-in holiday let. The living room opened up right there, all low beams and squishy sofas piled with cushions that screamed "flop down and forget the world". A wood burner squatted in the corner, unlit but begging for logs, and the windows framed views of rolling fields towards the coast. I could already picture lazy mornings with tea and toast, watching mist lift off the sea. The kids, meanwhile, discovered the board games stash under the telly and chaos ensued – Monopoly money flying everywhere before we'd even unpacked.

Wandering through, it was properly homely. The kitchen was a compact dream: Aga humming softly (thankfully not on full blast), a Belfast sink for dramatic dishwashing, and a table big enough for our lot to sprawl with fish and chips later. Up the creaky stairs – narrow as a ship's ladder, mind – were the bedrooms. Ours had a super-kingsize bed that looked like it could swallow you whole, with crisp white sheets and a window overlooking what I reckon is Chambercombe Manor way, all mysterious woods and whispers of smugglers' tales. The kids' room was a riot of bunks and teddies left by previous guests, sparking instant claims of territory.

Stepping out back to the patio was the real kicker. That hot tub – oh yes – bubbling away under a pergola, surrounded by lavender and herbs. We'd booked it for the relaxed family vibe, and there it was: promise of evening soaks with the stars out, steam rising as the tide rolled in audible from Hillsborough down the hill. The garden sloped gently to a fence, alive with birdsong and butterflies – proper simple pleasures. But let's be honest, lodge life kicked off with a bang: little one's welly got stuck in a muddy patch by the veg plot (Cairnwood's got one of those, brimming with runner beans), emerging with a squelch and a grin. Cue Mum's eye-roll and my feeble attempt at gardening wisdom: "That's how you harvest spuds, kids!" Yeah, right.

As the sun set proper, pink and orange over the Channel, we cracked open a bottle of local Barnstaple ale on the patio. The kids chased each other round the lawn till they dropped, and I sat there, mirror mishap forgotten, feeling that gentle tug of reflection. In the rush of school runs and work emails, you forget how a place like this resets the soul. No grand plans, just us, this wee lodge, and the rhythm of North Devon – waves crashing distant at Ilfracombe beach, a pasty from the high street tomorrow maybe. Cairnwood wasn't just a stay; it was that hug you didn't know you needed. Here's to first impressions that stick.
