About North Devon
I finally made it to Broadpath in Braunton after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Bristol. It was one of those classic North Devon journeys—winding lanes flanked by hedgerows bursting with wildflowers, the radio crackling with some rubbish pop song about summer loving. I'd set off full of beans, dreaming of sun-drenched coastal paths, but about 20 minutes from the turn-off, I managed to splatter my windscreen with a rogue dollop of mud from a passing tractor. Proper muppet moment, wiping it off with a McDonald's napkin while swearing under my breath. Still, it only delayed me by five minutes, and soon enough I was rumbling up the gravel drive to Broadpath Great Field Lodges, nestled in that peaceful spot just outside Braunton.

Pulling up to my cosy lodge, I was chuffed to bits. It's one of those proper rural retreats—wooden-clad, with a veranda overlooking fields that stretch towards the dunes. The first impressions hit like a warm hug: fresh sea air wafting in, birdsong everywhere, and not a whiff of city smog. I dumped my bags, brewed a cuppa, and stepped out for a proper gander. North Devon's got that wild, untamed vibe, and Broadpath feels right in the thick of it—close enough to Saunton Sands for a quick jaunt, but far enough to feel like your own secret hideaway.

Day one kicked off with ambitious plans for a hike along the South West Coast Path. I'd mapped out a cracking 5-mile loop from Saunton to Crow Point, imagining epic views over the Bristol Channel and maybe a dip in the surf. Weather app said "partly cloudy," so I layered up in my trusty waterproofs and set off, boots crunching on the sandy paths. The first stretch was bliss—rolling dunes carpeted in marram grass, the kind of scenery that makes you breathe deeper. Rabbits scarpered as I tramped along, and I even spotted a few seals bobbing offshore. Proper exhilarating, that fresh wind whipping your cheeks.

But oh, the British weather—it's got a wicked sense of humour, hasn't it? Halfway to Crow Point, the sky turned from fluffy white to battleship grey faster than you can say "soggy sandwich." Fat raindrops started, then it was a full-on deluge, horizontal as it battered the dunes. I hunkered down under a gorse bush, laughing at myself for thinking I'd outsmarted the forecast. Plan A out the window; I doubled back towards Braunton Burrows, turning it into a muddy slog through nature reserve paths. The ground turned to squelch underfoot, my socks soaked through, but there was something oddly brilliant about it—embracing the chaos, you know? Ended up at the Burrows' edge, watching waves crash like they were auditioning for a disaster movie.

Next morning, I woke to blue skies peeking through the lodge windows—classic Devon roulette. First impressions reaffirmed: Broadpath's veranda is prime for plotting your next move over toast and marmalade. I struck out for a gentler hike around Velator Quay, just a couple of miles away. Flat paths along the estuary, herons stalking the mudflats, and that glassy calm water reflecting the clouds. No rain this time, thank goodness, so I lingered, snapping pics of the reed beds swaying in the breeze. Felt like I'd stepped into a David Attenborough doc.

By day three, after another weather flip-flop—drizzle forcing an indoor coffee detour—I reflected on it all while nursing blisters on the lodge sofa. These hikes, rain or shine, stripped away the daily grind. North Devon's paths don't care about your itinerary; they humble you, make you present. Broadpath was the perfect base—quiet, comfy, with those first impressions of freedom lingering like salt on your skin. Can't wait to return, mud and all.
