About North Devon
I finally made it to that cosy 2 Bed Lodge in Fairy Cross after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Barnstaple. We'd set off full of beans for our three-day family break in North Devon, me, the missus, and our two lads, aged eight and ten. The sat-nav was doing its usual dance, insisting we take a detour through some winding lanes that felt more like sheep tracks than roads. Then, the insignificant mishap: I misjudged a pothole near Appledore – you know those Devon roads, more craters than tarmac – and splattered mud all over the windscreen. The kids thought it was hilarious, chanting "Mud monster! Mud monster!" while I wiped it off with a soggy McDonald's napkin. Classic dad fail, but it broke the ice after two hours of "Are we there yet?"

Pulling up to the lodge just before teatime, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in Fairy Cross, it's one of those proper little hideaways – a wooden lodge vibe, all rustic charm without being pretentious. The pics on Snaptrip didn't do it justice; from the gravel drive, you get this cracking view over the gentle Torridge countryside, rolling fields dotted with sheep and the odd tractor chugging by. No thumping traffic, just birdsong and the distant moo of cows. We piled out, bags flying everywhere, and the lads immediately dashed to explore the garden patch – it's got a decent lawn for footie, though our first kickabout ended with the ball vanishing into the hedge. "Dad, you've lost it again!" Cue eye-rolls all round.

Stepping inside for those first impressions, it felt like slipping into a warm hug. The open-plan living area is compact but spot-on for lodge life – squishy sofas begging for a collapse, a wood burner that promised cosy evenings (we hadn't lit it yet, but I could already smell the imagined pine), and a kitchenette stocked with all the basics. Kettle on sharpish for a brew, naturally. The two bedrooms are upstairs – ours with a comfy double overlooking the fields, the boys' with bunks that had them whooping like they'd won the lottery. "This is better than camping!" the youngest declared, bouncing like a kangaroo. Downside? The loo was tiny, and I bashed my elbow trying to manoeuvre – gentle chaos of family holidays, innit?

That first evening set the tone for our relaxed break. We wandered a stone's throw to the local Fairy Cross shop for milk and biscuits – proper village feel, chatting with the chap behind the counter about the weather (always raining, always glorious). Back at the lodge, we rustled up beans on toast, spilling half on the floor in the process – lodge life means embracing the mess. Sat outside on the picnic bench as the sun dipped, painting the sky all pink over the nearby Clovelly Road hills. The air was that fresh, salty tang from the coast just a few miles off; you could almost taste the English Channel.

As I watched the lads chase fireflies (or were they just glow worms? Who knows), I had a quiet moment of self-reflection. Amid the usual parental pandemonium – socks everywhere, endless snack demands – it hit me how these simple spots recharge the batteries. No screens, no schedules, just us in this little North Devon nook. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The lodge wasn't some fancy hotel; it was home for three days of muddy adventures and belly laughs. Can't wait to unpack more tomorrow, but right now, this is pure family bliss.
