About North Devon
I’d just turned off the A39 onto those narrow Devon lanes, bags rattling in the boot, when it happened – a rogue pheasant decided to play chicken with my hire car. I slammed on the brakes, heart in my mouth, and watched the feisty bird saunter off into the hedge like it owned the place. “Welcome to North Devon,” I muttered, chuckling to myself. A daft little mishap, but it set the tone for my three-day jaunt to the 2 Bed Lodge in Bideford – a cosy bolt-hole that promised peace and, as it turned out, a knack for stumbling on hidden gems.

Pulling up to the lodge that first afternoon, I was chuffed. Tucked away in a quiet spot just outside Bideford, it’s the sort of place that feels like a secret handshake with the countryside. Stone walls, a cheeky wood-burner in the lounge, and those big windows framing the rolling fields – proper North Devon vibes without the tourist tat. I dumped my gear, brewed a cuppa, and thought, right, no plans. That’s the beauty of these cottage stays: you let the lanes lead you, and the off-the-beaten-track spots reveal themselves.

First impressions? Blissful solitude. From the lodge’s garden, you’re steps from footpaths that snake off into nowhere. I wandered out aimlessly, phone in pocket but ignored, and within minutes, I’d found a tucked-away orchard heavy with scrumping apples – wild, gnarled trees dripping fruit you’d never spot on a map. Plucked a few (honest, they were begging for it), and munched as I pushed on. The light humour of it: me, city lad, pretending I’m a forager. “Bear Grylls, eat your heart out,” I grinned, juice dribbling down my chin.

Getting lost became the mission. Those lanes around Bideford are a maze of high hedges and sudden views – one wrong turn (or right, depending), and you’re on a single-track ribbon leading to a pebbly cove I’d bet my last pasty most visitors miss. Appledore’s just a hop away, but I veered off the main drag towards the estuary’s quieter fringes, where mudflats stretch out and herons stalk like grumpy bouncers. Parked up by a barn that looked abandoned (it wasn’t – a farmer waved cheerily), and followed a public footpath signposted to “nowt much.” Ended up at a wildflower meadow hugging the Torridge, alive with butterflies and the hum of bees. No crowds, no ice cream vans – just me, sprawled on the grass, watching a seal bob in the distance. Pure magic, discovered by sheer dumb luck.

Back at the lodge by dusk, that first evening sealed it. The kitchen’s compact but brilliant – whipped up fish from Bideford’s market (fresh mackerel, cheap as chips), fried with local spuds. Sat outside as the sun dipped, cider in hand, reflecting gently on how daft it is we chase Instagram hotspots. Here I was, first day in, unearthing these accidental treasures: a crumbling WWII pillbox half-buried in brambles, perfect for a picnic; a freshwater stream trickling through ferns where I paddled barefoot, giggling like a kid. Self-reflection hit soft – in the rush of life, we forget the joy of not knowing what’s round the bend. North Devon’s lanes teach you that; the lodge is your perfect launchpad.

By nightfall, cosied up with the wood-burner crackling, I was already plotting tomorrow’s aimless ramble. First impressions of the 2 Bed Lodge? It’s not just a stay – it’s an invitation to get properly, gloriously lost in North Devon’s best-kept secrets. Couldn’t recommend it more.
