About North Devon
I finally made it to that cheeky little 1 Bed Lodge in Fairy Cross after a drive from Barnstaple that was meant to be straightforward but turned into a comedy of errors. Picture this: I'm humming along the A39, windows down, dreaming of pasties and pastimes, when I take a wrong turn onto one of those narrow Devon lanes that twist like a hungover snake. Next thing I know, I'm face-to-face with a tractor the size of a small house, its farmer giving me that classic "you daft southerner" stare. I reverse for what feels like a mile, heart thumping, only to realise I'd missed the turning for Alwington by a hair. Laughable now, but in the moment, I was cursing my sat-nav like it was plotting against me. Still, 20 minutes later, I pulled up to the lodge, gravel crunching under the tyres, and all was forgiven.

Nestled in a quiet spot just off the road in Fairy Cross, this one-bed lodge is the epitome of cosy North Devon hideaway – a wooden haven with a pitched roof, surrounded by lush green gardens that scream "put your feet up and forget the world." From the off, my first impressions were pure bliss: the kind of place that wraps you in a hug and whispers, "No rush, love." I unloaded my bag – just a weekend holdall with a few books, tea bags, and wellies – and stepped inside. The open-plan living space hit me like a warm embrace: a squishy sofa piled with cushions, a wood burner begging for a lazy evening (though it was June, so more for aesthetics), and a kitchenette stocked with all the basics. Nothing fancy, but spot-on for someone like me who wanted to do bugger all but recharge.

The garden sealed the deal. Overlooking rolling fields towards the Torridge estuary – you catch glimpses of the water shimmering in the distance – it's got a patio with chairs that practically mould to your bum. I plonked myself down with a cuppa, the sun filtering through apple trees heavy with fruit, and birdsong providing the soundtrack. No neighbours in sight, just the gentle hum of rural Devon life. My plan? Zero. That's the joy of it. After months of city hustle, arriving here felt like slamming the brakes on life. I cracked open my book – some dog-eared detective novel I'd been meaning to finish – and lost hours watching clouds drift by. Light humour in the absurdity: me, a grown adult, giggling at a squirrel nicking a bird feeder nut like it was auditioning for a heist movie.

That first afternoon, I pottered about the garden paths, deadheading a few flowers because why not, feeling all virtuous without trying. The lodge's private outdoor space is perfect for that aimless wander – wildflowers nodding in the breeze, a bench under a pergola for pondering. Supper was simple: grabbed some fresh bread and cheese from the local shop in nearby Bucks Mills (a five-minute drive, if that), plus strawberries from a farm stand. Back at the lodge, I ate on the patio as the sun dipped low, painting the sky in those Devonian pinks and golds. No pubs, no hikes – just me, slowing down to the pace of a tortoise on holiday.

Evening brought gentle self-reflection as I sat by the window, tea steaming. Staring out at the darkening garden, I realised how knackered I'd been carrying the weight of deadlines and decisions. This lodge, with its unpretentious charm – the creaky bed that lulls you to sleep, the faint scent of pine – reminded me that joy's in the pauses. No grand adventures needed; just breathing in the peace of North Devon. By bedtime, I was already plotting a return, mishap and all. Fairy Cross had worked its magic in a day.
