About Forest Of Dean
I finally made it to the Wye Valley Gypsy Caravan in the Forest of Dean after what felt like the most faffing journey ever. Picture this: I'd set off from Gloucestershire's edges bright and early, sat-nav primed for Lydney, but no, the bloody thing decided to take me on a scenic detour through Symonds Yat's twisty lanes. Just as I was cursing under my breath, negotiating a narrow bridge over the River Wye, I hit a rogue pothole—bang!—and my coffee tumbler flew right into the passenger footwell, spilling its contents everywhere. Sticky hazelnut latte soaking my spare trainers. Classic me, turning a 30-minute drive into a comedy of errors. By the time I pulled up to the caravan site, I was half an hour late, frazzled, and reeking faintly of caffeine.

Stumbling out of the car, caravan key in hand, I was bracing for more chaos—visions of a bog-standard caravan park with screaming kids and blaring barbecues. But blimey, what a belter of a first impression. Nestled in a quiet pocket of the Forest of Dean, just a stone's throw from Lydney, this isn't your average tin box on wheels. It's a proper gypsy-style wagon, all curved wooden bows and canvas flaps, plonked in its own little glade like something out of a Enid Blyton tale. The owner, a cheery local chap called Mike, waved me over with a grin, unfazed by my dishevelled state. "No worries, mate, happens to the best of us," he chuckled, handing over a welcome basket stuffed with Forest-brewed cider and fresh scones. Proper thoughtful touch that.

Pushing open the door—well, the half-door, really—I stepped into a cosy nook that screamed charm. Inside, it's tiny but ticking every box: a double bed piled high with patchwork quilts, a wood-burning stove already laid with kindling, and a little kitchenette kitted out with a gas hob, retro kettle, and even a proper cafetière (much needed after my spill). The loo and shower are en-suite, surprisingly swish for a caravan, with hot water on tap and fluffy towels. No skimping here. Sunlight filtered through stained-glass panels, casting rainbow flecks on the walls, and from the window, I clocked deer grazing in the adjacent woodland. Forest of Dean magic, right on the doorstep.

I dumped my bags and flopped onto the bed, the slight creak of the wooden frame making me laugh. Here I was, a city lad used to concrete boxes, suddenly playing at nomadic bliss. That pothole mishap? Already fading into a funny story. I cracked open the cider—crisp, appley, local as they come—and wandered out to the private patio. Picnic bench, fire pit, fairy lights strung overhead. Perfect for al fresco evenings. A short stroll away, the site's wildflower meadow hummed with bees, and I could hear the Wye Valley's gentle burble. No traffic hum, no neon glare—just birdsong and that earthy forest scent.

As the sun dipped, painting the caravan in golden hues, I lit the fire pit and roasted marshmallows from the welcome pack. Crispy outside, gooey inside—pure nostalgia. Sat there, feet up, nursing my drink, I had one of those quiet moments. Life's been a right whirlwind lately, rushing about, forgetting to breathe. This little wagon, with its wonky charm and peaceful perch, was exactly the reset I needed. Three days ahead in the Forest of Dean? Bring it on. But honestly, that arrival kerfuffle made the first impressions hit even harder—proof that the best holidays start with a splash.
