About Forest Of Dean
I finally made it to the Wye Valley Cabin near Lydney in the Forest of Dean after what felt like the most faff-filled drive of my life. Picture this: I'd set off from Gloucestershire's busier bits early doors, sat-nav purring away, cup of builder's tea in the holder, dreaming of woodland walks and zero alarm clocks. But no, about ten miles out, I hit a cheeky diversion sign – some cheeky roadworks courtesy of the council, no doubt – and ended up looping round Symonds Yat like a lost puppy. To top it off, in my haste to reroute, I sloshed half my tea across the passenger seat. Sticky leather, a soggy map book, and me swearing like a proper trod-on trooper. By the time I pulled up to the cabin's gravel drive, I was knackered, caffeine-deprived, and questioning my life choices.

Stumbling out, I was hit by that proper Forest of Dean welcome: the air thick with pine and damp earth, birds cheeping away like they owned the place. The cabin itself? Blimey, it was a belter. Tucked into a wooded nook just off the beaten track near Lydney, it's one of those hot tub hideaways that looks straight out of a cosy catalogue – wooden cladding blending into the trees, fairy lights twinkling already in the afternoon gloom, and a veranda screaming "gin and tonic o'clock". I fumbled the key code (post-tea trauma, innit?), and as the door swung open, the chaos of arrival melted into proper "ahh" territory.

Inside, it was all low beams, plush sofas, and a wood burner begging for a match – though I held off, not wanting to set off the smoke alarm on minute one. The kitchen was kitted out like a pro: Belfast sink, that fancy Nespresso pod thing (salvation after my spill), and a fridge stocked with local bits – think Forest of Dean cheeses and a cheeky bottle of something bubbly I'd snuck in. But the real jaw-dropper? Those massive windows framing the valley view. You could see the Wye River snaking below, mist rolling off it like a proper fantasy film set. I dumped my bags, cracked open a window, and just stood there, breathing it all in. No traffic hum, no neighbourly bin-rattling – just rustling leaves and the odd distant sheep bleat.

Wandering out back, the hot tub was steaming invitingly under its pergola, surrounded by ferns and what looked like a million shades of green. I dipped a toe in – scalding, naturally, but promising bliss later. The decking led down a few steps to a private wooded patch, alive with blue tits flitting about and the faint roar of the river. Typical Forest of Dean magic, that – ancient oaks, bluebells peeking through even in autumn, and that sense you're miles from civilisation when you're barely five minutes from Lydney high street.

Sat on the veranda with a fresh brew (no spills this time), munching a cheese sarnie from the local shop I'd grabbed en route, I had one of those gentle "what am I doing?" moments. Work emails piling up back home, deadlines looming – but here I was, tea in hand, watching a squirrel nick nuts like it was auditioning for a Disney flick. Silly mishap aside, that arrival kerfuffle made the first impressions hit harder. This cabin wasn't just a holiday pad; it was a reset button, whispering "slow down, you daft sod". Three days ahead, but already I knew: Forest of Dean had me hooked from the gravel crunch.
