About Forest Of Dean
Pulling up to the lodge itself, though? Absolute magic. Nestled right in the heart of Wentwood's woods, just a stone's throw from Coleford, it's this cosy wooden haven that screams "get away from it all." The first glimpse as I crunched over the gravel drive was pure Forest of Dean fairy tale – surrounded by towering oaks and ferns, with dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy like nature's own disco lights. I hopped out, still shaking off the arrival drama, and the host handed me the keys with a grin: "Don't worry, happens to everyone round here." Understatement of the year. Stepping inside was like being hugged by a warm blanket. The open-plan living space opens right up with those big windows framing the woods – I dumped my bags and just stood there, gobsmacked. It's got that perfect Scandi-rustic vibe: plush sofas begging for a collapse, a wood-burning stove already set with kindling (genius), and a kitchen kitted out with everything from a fancy coffee machine to proper sharp knives. No faffing about with dodgy holiday gear here. I brewed a cuppa straight away, the kind of strong builder's tea that sorts out any lingering mishap blues, and flopped onto the sofa overlooking the private deck. Birds chirping, leaves rustling – it was instant zen. First impressions? The hot tub on the deck stole the show. I fired it up while the sun dipped low, bubbles churning away as steam rose into the cool evening air. Sinking in with a cold beer from the local Symonds Yat brewery I'd grabbed en route, I watched deer tiptoe through the undergrowth not 20 feet away. Hilarious moment: I nearly leapt out when a squirrel decided my toe was a nut, scampering right up to the tub's edge before scarpering. Laughing to myself, I thought, "This is why we do these trips – chaos on the way in, bliss once you're here." Wandering the immediate grounds that first afternoon was a treat too. A quick loop around the woodland paths – proper Forest of Dean stuff, with ancient trees and that earthy scent you can't bottle – revealed a little stream gurgling nearby and wild garlic everywhere. I picked a handful for a impromptu pesto later, feeling like a proper forager. Back inside, the bedrooms were a dream: king-sized bed piled high with duck-down duvets, en-suite with rainfall shower that rinsed off the farm-track grime in seconds. Cosy, spotless, and with those views? I was smitten. Reflecting on it now, that silly car spin-out was the perfect kick-off. It reminded me how these escapes aren't about seamless perfection; they're about shaking off the daily grind and letting the forest work its magic. By nightfall, tucked up with the stove crackling and woodland symphony outside, I was already plotting a return. Wentwood Forest Lodge? First impressions nailed it – muddy arrival and all. If you're after a proper Dean bolthole, this is your spot. |
