About Dorset
But oh, what a welcome sight it was. Nestled in the owners' garden, this little beauty is straight out of a storybook: a cosy wooden hut with a curved tin roof glistening under the drizzle, fairy lights twinkling along the porch despite the grey skies. I parked up (carefully this time), grabbed my dripping bags, and there was Jane, the owner, waving from the main house with a massive grin and a brolly. "Don't worry about the mud, love," she said in that warm West Country lilt. "We've all been there. Cuppa?" Bless her. She handed over the keys and a local map, pointing out the footpath to the Jurassic Coast just a mile or so away. No lectures, just pure Dorset hospitality. Stepping inside was like being hugged by a cloud. The door creaked open to reveal a pint-sized haven: low-beamed ceiling, a double bed piled high with goose-down duvets and cushions in soft blues and greens, evoking the sea just down the road. A wood-burning stove crackled away – Jane had lit it especially – casting a golden glow over the tartan rugs and quirky shepherd memorabilia. Tiny as it was (sleeps two, perfect for me and my other half), it felt luxurious: underfloor heating zapping the chill from my toes, a Nespresso machine humming on the kitchenette counter, and a telly discreetly tucked in a cabinet. The en-suite loo? Spotless, with fluffy towels and Molton Brown soaps that smelled of lavender fields. I chuckled to myself, peeling off my soggy socks – here I was, survivor of vehicular Armageddon, now queen of my own snug bolthole. First impressions? Magic. I flopped onto the bed, staring out the window at the garden's wildflowers nodding in the wind, the distant hum of Bridport's high street filtering faintly through. It was so peaceful, yet alive – birdsong mixing with the patter of rain on the roof. We ventured out briefly that evening, just a ten-minute wander to the Rope Walk for fish and chips from a proper chippie, the salty batter perfection after my ordeal. Back at the Snug, we cracked open a bottle of Dorset cider by the stove, laughing about my muddy arrival. "You turned up like a drowned rat," my partner teased. Guilty as charged. Sitting there, steam rising from my mug, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life's full of those daft mishaps – the wrong turns, the splashes – but they make the good bits shine brighter. The Shepherds Snug wasn't just a holiday let; it was an instant antidote to the rush, a reminder to slow down and savour the simple joys. Arriving in chaos only amplified how utterly wonderful it felt to be there. If you're after a Dorset escape that wraps you up warm from the off, this is it. Can't wait to go back – potholes and all. |
