About Dorset
I’ll never forget the drive down to The Lodge Elsdon Cottages near Lyme Regis – a proper Dorset jaunt that started with me cursing the satnav like it was my ex. We’d set off from the Midlands early, aiming for that classic three-day escape, but halfway through Devon, the bloody thing decided to reroute us via every narrow lane in creation. “Turn left in 200 yards,” it chirped, just as we squeezed past a tractor the size of a small house. Cue a minor mishap: I misjudged the hedge, and there was a rather undignified scrape along the side of the car. Nothing serious – just a scratch that’ll remind me to pack less bravado next time – but it had us laughing (and swearing) in equal measure as we finally spotted the Jurassic Coast winking at us through the windscreen.

By the time we trundled into the little car park at Elsdon Cottages, the sun was dipping low, painting the sky in those soft pinks and oranges that make Dorset feel like a postcard. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just a stone’s throw from Lyme Regis, the place is pure charm – a cluster of cosy stone cottages with climbing roses and thatched roofs that scream “proper English hideaway.” Ours was The Lodge itself, a delightful two-bedder with a front porch begging for a GandT at sunset. We’d booked it on a whim for its sea views and hot tub, and as I fumbled the keys (post-mishap nerves, obviously), the owner popped out with a welcoming grin and a basket of local treats: fresh scones, clotted cream, and a bottle of Dorset cider. “Don’t worry about the drive,” she said, eyeing my scratched wing mirror. “Happens to the best of us round here.”

Stepping inside was like sinking into a warm hug. The living room’s got this big inglenook fireplace (unlit, but I could already picture logs crackling on night two), squishy sofas in muted greens, and telly disguised as a painting – genius. Kitchen was kitted out proper: Aga vibes without the faff, plus all the gadgets for knocking up a fry-up. But the real jaw-dropper? Those floor-to-ceiling windows framing the garden rolling down to glimpses of the sea. Lyme Bay sparkling away, with the Cobb’s silhouette just visible on the horizon. We dumped the bags and beelined for the patio, where the hot tub bubbled invitingly under fairy lights. First impressions? Blimey, it was heaven after our arrival chaos.

Popping the cider, we toasted the mishap – “To scraped cars and serendipity!” – and just sat there, feet up, watching gulls wheel over the waves. The garden’s a riot of lavender and wildflowers, buzzing with bees, and there’s a cheeky wood-burner for chillier evenings. Upstairs, the bedrooms are snug as a bug: king-size bed piled with feather duvets, en-suite with a rainfall shower that could wash away a week’s worth of city grime. Mine overlooked the courtyard, where fairy lights twinkled like stars had fallen early.

That first evening, as the sun slipped behind the cliffs, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Sat there with a cuppa, scratched car forgotten, I thought about how we rush about, chasing perfect holidays, when really it’s these little scrambles – the detours, the daft scrapes – that make the good bits shine brighter. Elsdon Cottages nailed it from the off: unpretentious luxury that feels like home, but with that Dorset magic thrown in. No wonder we didn’t want to leave the garden, let alone the cottage. If you’re after first impressions that stick, this is your spot – mishaps and all. Can’t wait to go back.
