About Dorset
I finally made it to The Lobster Pot in Lyme Regis after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M5. We'd piled into the car that Friday morning, me, the wife, and our two lads, aged 8 and 10, buzzing with that pre-holiday excitement that turns boys into human tornadoes. The sat-nav, bless its unreliable soul, decided to take us on a detour through some winding Devon lanes narrower than a supermodel's diet. Cue the classic family mishap: halfway there, I misjudged a blind corner, clipped a hedge, and ended up with a rearview mirror festooned with bramble twigs like a festive Christmas wreath. "Dad's turned us into the Beverly Hillbillies!" my youngest cackled from the back. We laughed it off, extracted ourselves, and arrived at the cottage just as the late afternoon sun dipped towards the Jurassic Coast.

Pulling up to The Lobster Pot, tucked away in a quiet spot overlooking the sea, I felt that instant "ahh" of arrival. It's one of those classic Dorset fishermen's cottages – think whitewashed stone walls, a pitched slate roof, and flower baskets spilling over with geraniums, all just a short stroll from Lyme Regis harbour. No grand driveway, just a gravel patch where we parked amid the faint tang of salt air and seaweed. Unloading the boot was pure lodge life chaos: suitcases tumbling out, the boys racing ahead with fishing rods (optimistic, given their track record), and Sarah wrestling the cool bag while muttering about my driving. "Next time, we're taking the train," she grinned.

Stepping inside for those first impressions, it was love at first creak. The door opened straight into a cosy living room with low-beamed ceilings that had me ducking instinctively – a gentle reminder I'm no longer a sprightly 20-something. A wood-burning stove squatted in the corner, laid with kindling and promising evenings of toasty bliss, while mismatched armchairs begged for a collapse with a cuppa. The kitchen was a dream for lazy family breaks: flagstone floors, a Rayburn cooker that looked like it could whip up a proper fry-up, and a window seat framing views of the harbour where fishing boats bobbed like contented ducks. We dumped our bags and raided the welcome basket – local scones, clotted cream, and a bottle of Dorset cider. "Result!" chorused the lads, already eyeing the clotted cream with jam-smeared glee.

Upstairs, the bedrooms were snug as a bug, with sash windows letting in that crisp sea breeze. Our room had a super-kingsize bed piled with feather duvets, and the boys' shared one overlooked the garden, where they immediately plotted a den-building session with the picnic benches outside. First impressions? Pure relaxed magic. No blaring telly needed; the soundtrack was gulls crying and waves whooshing faintly below the cliffs.

That evening, we ambled the 10-minute path to the beach – classic Dorset shingle crunching underfoot – and skimmed stones as the sun set in a pinky-orange blaze over the Cobb. Back at the Pot, chaos reigned in the best way: I burned the first batch of fish and chips (sourced from the harbour chippy, naturally), sparking howls of laughter and a dash of vinegar to save the day. Sat round the farmhouse table, stuffing faces and swapping daft stories, it hit me in a quiet moment of self-reflection: these simple pleasures – a wonky mirror mishap, clotted cream dollops, and cottage creaks – are what recharge the soul. In the rat race back home, we forget how a three-day family bolt-hole like this strips life back to its joyful bones. Here's to more of it.
