I finally made it to Superior Plus Lodge (Pet) in Swanage after a bit of a faff on the drive down from London. Picture this: I'm trundling along the A31, radio blaring some classic Oasis, when I realise I've left my fancy chopping board at home. Not just any board – the one with the fancy grooves for juices. Daft, innit? So there I am, pulling into a layby near Poole Harbour, rummaging in the boot for a makeshift alternative – a sodding clipboard from the glovebox. Proper chef material, me.

The lodge itself is tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Swanage, close enough to pop into town but far enough for that cosy, get-away-from-it-all vibe. It's a proper gem for dog owners – my spaniel, Rufus, was in heaven from the off, sniffing every blade of grass on the little patio. First impressions? Spot on. The place is modern but homely, with a cracking kitchen that's begging for some culinary experiments. I dumped the bags, cracked open a tin of Rufus's biscuits, and headed straight for the Co-op in Swanage for supplies. No holiday starts without a proper stock-up, does it?

That first evening, I was starving after the drive, so I wandered down to The Black Swan pub, just a short stroll away along the coastal path. Swanage High Street was buzzing with locals and a few other holidaymakers, the air thick with that salty sea tang mixed with chip fat. I grabbed a pint of Otter Ale – smooth as you like – and settled for their fish and chips. Massive portion, beer-battered cod flaking just right, peas mushy as Mum makes 'em. Rufus got a sneaky bit of batter under the table; don't tell the staff. Sat there watching the sun dip over the bay, I thought, blimey, this is what it's about – simple grub, good beer, and no emails pinging.

Next morning, day two kicked off with a disaster in the lodge kitchen. I'd bought fresh mackerel from the Swanage Bay View market stall – those lads had the catch of the day gleaming on ice, straight from the boats. Thought I'd impress myself with a grill-up: mackerel fillets, new potatoes from the veg van nearby, and a lemon drizzle sauce. Except my clipboard 'board' warped under the heat, and the fish stuck like glue. Ended up scraping it into a pan for a hash, which wasn't half bad with a fried egg on top. Laughed at myself while Rufus hoovered the scraps – proper bonding moment over burnt offerings. Still, that kitchen's a dream: induction hob, all the gadgets, and a window overlooking the garden where Rufus could chase shadows.

Lunch was a cheeky pasty from the bakery on the high street – proper Cornish style, beef and spud oozing out, eaten on a bench by the pier. Washed it down with a takeaway coffee from the little café next door. Afternoon, I pottered to the Purbeck Pantry deli, just up the road, for cheeses and crusty bread. Dorset Blue Vinny, sharp and crumbly, paired with their homemade chutney – heaven. Back at the lodge, I sliced it up on a proper plate this time (lesson learned) and cracked a bottle of local cider from the offy. Sat on the decking as the light faded, Rufus snoring beside me, and had a proper think: life's too short for perfect chopping boards or Instagram-worthy meals. Sometimes the stickiest fish leads to the best stories.

Evening called for The Ship Inn, another Swanage local within easy reach. Proper pub grub: slow-cooked lamb shank that fell off the bone, mash creamy as clouds, and a side of greens from local farms. Puddings were a highlight – sticky toffee with proper clotted cream. Chatted with a couple from Worthing about their dog, swapped holiday tips over a nightcap. Back at the lodge by nine, knackered but buzzing, I rustled up tea and toast – simple win.

By the end of that first full day, Superior Plus Lodge had me hooked. It's all about those unhurried meals, the fresh market hauls, and laughing off the cock-ups. Rufus and I were already plotting tomorrow's feast. Dorset does food right – can't wait for more.
