About Dorset
I finally made it to that Superior Lodge with Ensuite and Decking near Dorchester after a right faff of a drive down from London. It was one of those typical Dorset journeys—winding lanes flanked by chocolate-box hedgerows and the odd sheep eyeing you suspiciously as if you'd gatecrashed their picnic. My insignificant mishap? About five miles out, I took a wrong turn onto a single-track road that narrowed into what felt like a badger's commute. There I was, reversing into a nettle patch with a flock of pheasants scattering like feathered confetti, muttering "bloody sat-nav" under my breath. Laughable now, but it had me chuckling at my own daftness by the time I pulled up to the lodge.

Stepping out onto the gravel, I was hit with that instant "ahh" of arrival. Tucked away in a peaceful holiday park just outside Dorchester, this superior lodge looked like it had been plonked there by a benevolent woodland fairy. Compact and cosy, with its wooden cladding glowing in the late afternoon sun, it promised the kind of unpretentious comfort I'd been craving after months of city hustle. I hauled my bag up the steps to the private decking—that was the clincher, really. A sturdy wooden platform overlooking a lush garden area, complete with benches and enough space to sprawl out without feeling hemmed in. Birds were twittering away, and the air smelled of damp earth and wildflowers, proper Dorset fresh.

Inside, first impressions didn't disappoint. The open-plan living space was all warm neutrals and soft lighting, with a squishy sofa that practically begged you to sink into it. The kitchenette was kitted out just right—nothing flashy, but a proper kettle for a builder's brew, a mini fridge stocked with milk (I'd requested that), and even a toaster for lazy crumpets. The ensuite was a treat: compact but spotless, with a rainfall shower that turned my travel-weary bones to jelly. I stripped off, let the hot water cascade, and thought, "This is it—three days of bugger all, and I'm here for it."

That first evening set the tone perfectly. I cracked open a bottle of Dorset cider I'd nabbed from a farm shop en route—no grand plans, just me, a deckchair on the decking, and the sunset painting the sky in pinks and golds. The garden stretched out lazily, a shared green space dotted with wild buttercups and the hum of bees. No TV blaring, no emails pinging; just the rustle of leaves and distant lowing of cows from a nearby field. I flicked through a battered paperback I'd brought—some light crime novel—and let the words blur into the evening haze. Dinner? A simple pasta slung together from the cupboards, eaten al fresco as the light faded. Blissful doing nothing.

The next morning reinforced it all. Woke to birdsong filtering through the blinds, brewed a coffee strong enough to wake the dead, and ambled out to the decking in my PJs. No rush. The lodge felt like a hug—everything within arm's reach, designed for lingering. I spent hours there, feet up, watching clouds amble across the sky like they had nowhere to be. A gentle wander later took me no further than the park's paths, skirting ponds where mallards bobbed about, and past wildflower meadows buzzing with life. Picked up a pasty from a local spot in Dorchester—proper Cornish-style, flaky and steaming—and brought it back to devour slowly, crumbs on my lap.

By day three, that first-impression magic had woven its spell deep. Sitting there with a cuppa, gazing at the garden's gentle sway, I had a quiet moment of self-reflection. Life back home's a treadmill, innit? Chasing deadlines, scrolling endlessly. Here, in this unassuming lodge, I'd rediscovered the joy of slowing right down—of savouring the small stuff, like the way sunlight dapples through oaks or the simple pleasure of breath without agenda. No epiphanies, just a soft nudge: maybe doing very little is the point sometimes. If you're after a Dorset reset, this place is gold—pure, lazy perfection.
