About Sir George Baker Cabin.

The beautiful countryside around Uplyme, on the Devon-Dorset border, is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, criss-crossed by bridleways and footpaths like the East Devon Way, ideal for walks with superb views. TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall chose nearby Park Farm for his River Cottage HQ. A short drive reaches the Jurassic Coast at Lyme Regis, a historic seaside town with narrow streets, shops, cafés, sandy beaches for bathing and watersports, a harbour for fishing trips, and fossil hunting. Nearby Axminster and Seaton Tramway add variety. Perfect for a holiday.

About Dorset
I finally made it to Sir George Baker Cabin near Lyme Regis after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M5. We'd packed the car with enough snacks to feed a small army (the kids insisted on crisps and Percy Pigs), and about an hour in, I managed to spill my entire thermos of tea right into the passenger footwell. Cue soggy maps, a frantic stop at a services for paper towels, and the wife shooting me that look that says, "This is day one, mate." Classic me, turning a straightforward drive into mild chaos. But as we wound down those narrow Dorset lanes, past hedgerows bursting with blackberries and the odd cow eyeing us suspiciously, the nerves melted away. Dorset has that effect – it's like the countryside's giving you a big, leafy hug.

Pulling up to the cabin just before sunset was pure magic. Tucked away in a peaceful spot overlooking the rolling fields towards Lyme Regis – we're talking maybe a couple of miles from the sea, close enough to hear the waves in your dreams – this little gem is everything a family break should be. It's one of those quirky shepherd's huts turned cosy retreat, all compact and characterful, with a wood-fired hot tub bubbling away like it was waiting just for us. The kids tumbled out first, wide-eyed at the fairy lights strung around the decking and the wood-burner peeking through the window. "Is this our castle, Dad?" my youngest asked, and I had to laugh – aye, love, our very own posh shed.

Stepping inside, the first impressions hit like a warm embrace. The space is brilliantly snug: a double bed piled high with fluffy quilts, a cheeky single bunk for the little one that had her giggling before she'd even climbed up, and a sofa that practically begged us to flop onto it. The kitchenette was a doddle – kettle on for a proper brew, toaster for beans on toast (because who needs fancy on arrival night?). We cracked open a bottle of local cider from the nearby farm shop – West Dorset does them spot on, crisp and not too sweet – and just breathed it all in. Outside, the hot tub was steaming under the stars, surrounded by that endless sky you only get in the proper countryside. No light pollution, no neighbours peering over; just us, the family, and the faint bleat of sheep in the distance.

That first evening, we lit the fire pit (instructions were idiot-proof, thankfully – unlike my tea-spilling skills) and roasted marshmallows till they were gooey disasters. The kids chased fireflies – or what they swore were fireflies; probably just glow worms – while I dunked myself in the hot tub, jets pounding away the drive's kinks. Lyme Regis felt tantalisingly close, its Jurassic cliffs whispering promises of fossil hunts tomorrow, but right then, we were content with cabin life. A bit of chaos ensued when the eldest knocked over a chair trying to spot bats, sending cushions flying, but it was the good kind – the sort that ends in belly laughs and "never a dull moment" hugs.

As I sat there later, pint in hand, watching the kids conk out on the sofa to the soundtrack of crackling wood, I had one of those quiet moments. You know the ones? Amid the lodge-life mayhem – the spilled tea, the sugar rush, the sheer bliss of doing bugger all – I realised this is what holidays are for. Not ticking off lists, but soaking up these simple joys: fresh air that tastes like freedom, a space that feels like home but better, and family time that reminds you life's too short for anything but the good bits. Sir George Baker Cabin nailed it from the off. Can't wait for day two.
