About Dorset
Unpacking my boot full of provisions was the real starter. I'd swung by a farm shop en route near Wareham (just a quick detour, mind), grabbing local cheeses, plump tomatoes from the Isle of Purbeck, and a slab of Dorset Blue Vinney that could knock your socks off. The lodge's kitchen is kitted out brilliantly – shiny hob, massive fridge, and all the pots you need for faffing about like a proper chef. My first attempt at dinner was ambitious: a Dorset seafood stew. I'd picked up fresh mackerel and prawns from the Swanage Bay fish stall on the way in (they're right by the beach, impossible to miss). Chopping onions with the window open, sea breeze wafting in, I felt like Jamie Oliver on a good day. Except I overseasoned it with smoked paprika – tasted like a bonfire in a bowl. Still, scoffed the lot with a hunk of sourdough from the local bakery, washed down with a crisp Purbeck Cider from the fridge. Sat out on the deck as the sun dipped, licking my lips and thinking, "Not bad for a townie." Next morning, breakfast was all about the full Dorset. The lodge had a welcome pack with eggs from nearby free-range hens and bacon from a Purbeck butcher – proper thick rashers, none of your flimsy supermarket stuff. I fried it up with mushrooms foraged in spirit (okay, bought from the greengrocers), black pudding slices, and baked beans for that nostalgic kick. Attempting homemade hash browns? Disaster – turned into a mushy pancake. Chuckled to myself over the hob, wondering why I bother when the views are this good. But honestly, that first brekkie, burnt bits and all, set the tone: slow, savoury, satisfying. Wandering down to Swanage high street for lunch was pure joy. The place buzzes with holidaymakers, but the food spots keep it real. Popped into the local market near the square – stalls heaving with artisan breads, pasties stuffed with local beef and ale, and jars of Purbeck honey. Snagged a crab sandwich from a seafood van, the freshest you'd find, with lemony mayo dripping everywhere. Ate it on a bench overlooking the bay, waves crashing, feeling a proper pang of self-reflection: back home, I'm always rushing lunches at my desk, inhaling rubbish. Here, every bite's a moment, no distractions. Evening called for the pub. The Black Swan, just a hop from the lodge, is a classic – low ceilings, roaring fire, and punters swapping stories. I went for the pie of the day: venison from Exmoor (close enough to feel local), encased in buttery pastry with gravy that could make you weep. Paired it with a pint of Ringwood ale, brewed not far off. Chatted with the barman about the best spots for crab fishing – turns out you can just nip down to the beach. Back at the lodge, I rustled up a nightcap of local gin with tonic from the offy, feet up on the sofa, belly full. That first full day at Signature Lodge 2 revolved around the eats, from botched stews to pub perfection, and it was spot on. Nothing beats Dorset's grub for making a holiday stick. Can't wait to plot tomorrow's feast. |
