About Dorset
I finally made it to Sea Spray after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Bristol. I'd set off full of beans, playlist blasting some indie tunes, but about halfway through, I realised I'd forgotten to pack my phone charger. No biggie, I thought, until my satnav decided to throw a wobbly just as I hit the twisty lanes around Lyme Regis. It rerouted me via some random farm track, leaving me swearing at a flock of sheep blocking the way. Classic me – always turning a simple journey into a minor adventure. But honestly, by the time I pulled up outside this gorgeous little lodge on the edge of town, I was already chuckling about it. The sun was dipping low over the Jurassic Coast, and there was Sea Spray, all snug and inviting, like it was waiting just for me.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. Perched in a quiet spot with views peeking through to the sea, this place is the epitome of cosy Dorset charm. I unlocked the door with that satisfying click, and stepped into a world of pure relaxation. The open-plan living area hit me right away – squishy sofas piled high with cushions, a wood burner begging for a lazy evening log, and big windows framing the garden like a living painting. I dumped my bags and just stood there, breathing it all in. No rush, no agenda. This was my three-day ticket to doing sod all, and I was here for it.

Day one was all about settling in and savouring the slowness. I wandered out to the private patio garden first thing, mug of tea in hand. It's a proper suntrap, enclosed with those classic cottage hedges buzzing with bees, and a couple of loungers perfect for flopping. I spent the morning there, nose in a battered paperback I'd grabbed from the charity shop – some light thriller that kept me turning pages without taxing the brain. The sea breeze whispered through, carrying that salty tang, and every so often I'd glance up at the Cobb in the distance, that iconic Lyme Regis harbour curving out like a dragon's tail. No need to hike it yet; from the garden, it was close enough to feel part of the scene without lifting a finger.

Lunch was a no-cook affair – cracking open a pasty from the local bakery I'd spotted on the way in. Proper Dorset stuff, flaky pastry stuffed with steak and spuds, eaten perched on the garden bench while the world slowed to a crawl. I swear, the joy of doing very little hit me then. Back home, I'd be scrolling endlessly or ticking off to-dos, but here? Time stretched out like the beach at low tide. I pottered inside for a nap on the sofa, waking to the gentle patter of rain on the conservatory roof. Perfect excuse to brew more tea and crack on with the book.

Come afternoon, I fancied a gentle amble – nothing strenuous, mind. A ten-minute stroll down to the Undercliff, that wild, fossil-strewn path hugging the cliffs. I meandered along, picking up the odd ammonite-shaped stone (or so I imagined), letting my mind wander as much as my feet. The sea crashed below, gulls wheeled overhead, and I felt that rare buzz of contentment. No Instagram snaps, no rushing back – just me, the waves, and the thrill of bugger all on the schedule.

Evening brought the wood burner to life, a simple supper of cheese on toast, and more reading by the glow. As I sat there, flames dancing, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Lately, life's been a whirlwind of deadlines and distractions, leaving me knackered. But curled up in Sea Spray, with its welcoming nooks and that garden hush, I realised how much I needed this. Slowing down isn't lazy; it's essential. It's the joy of being, not doing. By bedtime, tucked under the duck-down duvet with the sea murmuring outside, I was already plotting a return. Dorset, you've got me hooked on the art of sweet nothing.
