I finally made it to Mellstock after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M3, via a detour that had me questioning my sat-nav's life choices. Here I was, 48 hours from London, already feeling the knots unravel. Why do we wait so long between these escapes?

Stepping out for a proper mooch, the location blew me away. Mellstock's bang in the sweet spot – a brisk ten-minute stroll to Weymouth Harbour, where fishing boats bob and chip shops waft their greasy promises. I wandered down, past beach huts painted like seaside sweeties, and dipped my toes in the shallows. The pebble beach crunched underfoot, families building sandcastles, kites whipping in the breeze. Picked up a fresh crab salad from a stall – Dorset seafood doesn't mess about – and plonked on the prom, watching paddleboarders wobble their way out towards Portland Bill's silhouette. Back at the cottage by teatime, I cracked a local ale from the Weymouth Brewery (found it in the pantry – cheers, Mike), fired up the BBQ in the garden, and just soaked it in. The sun dipping low, painting the thatch gold, distant waves crashing. That seagull incident? Forgotten. This place has that magic – unpretentious, timeless Dorset charm that wraps you up like a warm jumper.

By nightfall, with stars popping out over the harbour lights, I was already plotting day two (maybe a potter to the fort or a lazy beach day).
