About Dorset
Pulling up to Lyme Cordial, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in a quiet spot overlooking the Undercliff, this cosy little cottage screamed proper Dorset charm – whitewashed walls, a thatched roof that looked like it had stories to tell, and a front garden bursting with hydrangeas still holding on despite the autumn nip. The host, a cheery local chap named Tom, handed over the keys with a grin and a warning: "Mind the weather, love – she's a fickle one round here." Understatement of the year, as it turned out. I dumped my bags, kicked off my wellies, and cracked open the first window to that bracing sea air. First impressions? Bliss. The place felt like a hug from an old mate – compact kitchen with a Rayburn that promised hearty stews, a lounge with a wood burner begging to be lit, and upstairs, a bedroom with views straight out to the Jurassic Coast. I could already picture lazy mornings with coffee and the papers. Day one proper kicked off with a hike along the South West Coast Path, right from the cottage door. Lyme Regis beach was calling, so I layered up in waterproofs (Tom wasn't wrong) and headed out, the path winding past golden sands littered with fossils – proper Mary Anning territory. The weather was playing nice at first: crisp blue skies, gulls wheeling overhead, and that satisfying crunch underfoot on the shingle. I pottered along to Church Cliffs, spotting ammonites winking up from the pebbles, feeling like a kid again. But oh, the British weather – ten minutes later, a squall rolled in from the Channel, turning the horizon into a watery blur. Rain hammered down like it had a personal grudge, and the wind whipped my hood off, leaving me spluttering and laughing at my sodden reflection in a rock pool. Plan A – a full circuit to Charmouth – was scuppered; instead, I ducked into the Cobb, that iconic harbour wall, huddling with a gaggle of equally drenched dog-walkers. We swapped tales of worse downpours, and I treated myself to a cream tea in a nearby café, the scone still warm despite my dripping jacket. Back at the cottage by early afternoon, I lit the fire, peeled off layers like a soggy onion, and reflected on how these impromptu changes are what make a trip memorable. Here I was, meant to be striding manfully across cliffs, but instead nursing a mug of Earl Grey, cosy as you like, pondering life's little detours – mine, and the weather's. Come evening, the clouds parted for a golden hour saunter down to the Marine Parade. The path hugged the cliffs, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, with the sea murmuring below like it was sharing secrets. First impressions of Lyme Cordial deepened: after a day of weather-whipped walks, it was the perfect bolthole – slippers on, pasta bubbling, and the sound of waves lulling me into an early night. Who needs grand plans when a hike interrupted by rain leads to such simple joys? Dorset had me hooked from the off, and Lyme Cordial felt like home already. |
