About Dorset
I finally made it to Lulstead after what felt like the scenic route from hell, courtesy of my sat-nav deciding to play silly buggers halfway through Dorset. Picture this: I'm trundling along those narrow lanes near Weymouth, windows down, humming along to some cracking indie playlist, when the bloody thing beeps and redirects me down a single-track road that looks like it's been forgotten since the Jurassic period. Next thing I know, I've nudged the wing mirror against a rogue blackthorn hedge – nothing major, just a cheeky scratch that made me swear like a proper navvy. Laughable now, but in the moment, with the sun dipping low over the Jurassic Coast, I was proper fuming. Still, it was the perfect chaotic prelude to arriving at this gem of a cottage, right on the edge of Weymouth.

Pulling up to Lulstead just as twilight was kicking in, I was gobsmacked. Tucked away in a quiet spot overlooking the sea, it's one of those classic stone cottages that screams "proper Dorset getaway" – whitewashed walls, a thatched roof that could star in a postcard, and flower baskets spilling over with geraniums like they've been at the gin. The owner, a lovely chap called Mike, was there to greet me with a wave and a mug of tea, apologising for the "bit of a faff" with the parking. Faff? Mate, after my hedge skirmish, this was luxury. He showed me in, and blimey, the first impressions hit like a wave on Chesil Beach.

Stepping inside, the living room wrapped me in this cosy hug – low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove begging to be lit (though it was still balmy out), and squishy sofas piled with cushions that screamed "put your feet up, you deserve it." The kitchen was a dream for a solo traveller like me: Aga humming away, fresh bread and local butter on the counter, and those little touches like a jug of wildflowers from the garden. I dumped my bags and beelined for the patio doors – because yes, it opens straight onto a private terrace with views that nearly floored me. Weymouth Bay stretched out, the sea all glassy and golden in the dying light, with Nothe Fort just visible in the distance. Gulls wheeling about, the faint chug of fishing boats heading home. It was like the universe saying, "Forget the mirror, lad, you're here now."

That first evening, I cracked open a bottle of Dorset cider I'd picked up en route (from a farm shop just down the road, naturally), and just sat there, feet up on the wooden bench, watching the sun sink behind Portland Bill. The air smelled of salt and honeysuckle, and for the first time in months, the knot in my chest from work loosened. I chuckled to myself about the drive – what a numpty, getting arsey over a scratch when paradise was five minutes away. It's funny how these little mishaps sharpen the joy, innit? Makes you appreciate the quiet magic of places like this.

Wandering the garden the next morning – day two of my three-day jaunt – I discovered it's basically a wild meadow meets seaside Eden. Bees buzzing around lavender, a hammock swaying gently, and steps leading down to a shingle path that spits you out near Weymouth's beach. I nipped down for a proper fry-up at a greasy spoon on the Esplanade, just a short stroll away, then ambled back with a paper under my arm. The cottage felt even more inviting in daylight: sunlight flooding the bedrooms upstairs, each with its own sea peek, crisp white linens, and those sash windows that let in the breeze. I spent the afternoon parked on the terrace with a book, dipping in and out of dozing off to the rhythm of the waves. No itinerary, no rush – just pure, unadulterated bliss.

By the third morning, that initial chaos of arrival was a distant giggle. Sipping coffee on the patio, watching families build sandcastles on the beach below, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home's a whirlwind of deadlines and doom-scrolling, but here at Lulstead, everything slowed to a Dorset dawdle. That scratched mirror? Best thing that happened – it reminded me to laugh at the detours. If you're after a spot to reset, this cottage is it: chaotic arrival optional, but the first impressions? Bloody unforgettable.
