About Dorset
I finally made it to Lodge 9 near Wareham after a bit of a faff on the A31. Picture this: I'm trundling along in my trusty old Fiesta, windows down, humming along to some cracking Radio 2 tunes, when – splat! – a rogue pheasant decides to audition for the windscreen. No harm done, just a feathery feather duster moment that left me chuckling and pulling over for a quick clean-up with a pack of wet wipes. Classic me, turning a simple two-hour drive from Southampton into a minor wildlife documentary. But honestly, it set the perfect tone for what turned out to be the laziest, loveliest three days imaginable.

Pulling up to Lodge 9 just before teatime on that golden Friday evening, I was smitten straight away. Tucked into a quiet corner of the Purbeck countryside, it's one of those proper cosy lodges – think low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burner begging to be lit, and a kitchenette stocked with everything you'd need for a fry-up without faffing about. The owners had left fresh milk, bread, and a cheeky bottle of Dorset apple juice in the fridge, which felt like a warm hug after the road. I dumped my bag, kicked off my trainers, and just stood there in the lounge, breathing it all in. No itinerary, no grand plans – just the joy of doing bugger all, surrounded by that soft, late-summer light filtering through the windows.

First impressions? Blissfully unhurried. The garden was the star of the show – a proper sun trap with loungers, a picnic bench, and views over rolling fields dotted with grazing sheep. I cracked open a book (some dog-eared P.G. Wodehouse for light relief), brewed a massive mug of builder's tea, and flopped out there as the sun dipped low. It's funny how, in the rush of everyday life, you forget how good it feels to let time stretch out like warm toffee. No emails pinging, no deadlines lurking – just the rustle of leaves and the odd bleat from the sheep next door. I must've sat there for hours, reading a chapter, dozing off, then reading the same chapter again because my mind kept wandering to the clouds.

Saturday morning dawned misty over the nearby River Frome, and I fancied a gentle potter to shake off the drive. A five-minute amble took me to the water's edge, where I watched narrowboats chug lazily past, their owners waving hello with mugs in hand. Wareham's just a hop away if you fancy it – I nipped in for a paper and some pasties from the bakery, proper flaky ones stuffed with local beef. Back at the lodge, though, the real magic was in the sloth. I lit that wood-burner (even though it was mild out – why not?), rustled up eggs on toast, and spent the afternoon in the garden hammock, swinging gently while the world slowed to a crawl. A light drizzle pattered down later, sending me indoors to curl up with more Wodehouse, feet up on the sofa, a blanket over my knees. Pure heaven.

By Sunday, I'd hit peak relaxation. First impressions had evolved into full-on lodge love – the kind of place that whispers "stay put" from every nook. I wandered the garden paths again, spotting butterflies on the lavender, then treated myself to a slow lunch of cheese and crackers on the bench, watching the world go by. No hikes up the Purbeck Hills for me this trip; that could wait. Instead, I reflected on how knackering it is always chasing the next thing – work, errands, the gym. Here, doing very little felt like the ultimate luxury. As I packed up that evening, reluctantly heading back to reality, I promised myself more of this. Lodge 9 isn't just a holiday spot; it's a reminder to switch off and savour the simple stuff. Can't wait to return for more glorious nothing.
