About Dorset
I finally made it to Lodge 8 near Wareham after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M3. We'd packed the car with enough crisps, wellies, and kids' squabbles to last a siege, but about five miles from the turning, I took a wrong slip onto a narrow lane that spat us out at a muddy farm gate. "Dad, are we lost in a cow field?" my youngest piped up from the back, as I reversed with the grace of a JCB. Classic me – navigator of the stars, until Dorset's hedges get involved. A quick U-turn, a sheepish Google, and we were back on track, laughing about my 'adventure' over a bag of ready salted.

Pulling up to Lodge 8 just before teatime was pure magic. Tucked into a peaceful holiday park on the edge of the River Frome, it's one of those proper little wooden lodges that screams cosy getaway. Low-slung with a pitched roof, decking out front overlooking a shared green sward where other families were already firing up barbecues, it felt like stepping into a postcard of Purbeck countryside. The key turned smoothly in the lock – no faffing about – and inside, blimey, it was spot on for us lot. Compact kitchen with all the mod cons: toaster for my morning marmalade ritual, a proper hob for frying up bacon, and a fridge that hummed away happily. The lounge had that squashy sofa setup, telly on the wall, and board games stacked in a cupboard – perfect for rainy evenings, though we were praying for sun.

First impressions? It was like the lodge had been waiting for us. We dumped the bags and piled straight onto the deck for a nose around. The view's a belter – rolling fields dotted with grazing horses, and just a whisper away, the Frome glittering under the late sun. My other half cracked open a couple of tins while the kids dashed off to explore the play area not 50 yards off. Slides, swings, a bit of climbing frame – nothing fancy, but they were in heaven, shrieking with that unfiltered joy only five- and seven-year-olds can muster. I joined them for a go on the zip wire, only to get stuck halfway like a stranded piñata. "Push off, Dad!" they yelled, doubled over. Proper lodge life chaos, and I wouldn't swap it.

Wandering back as dusk fell, we spotted neighbours waving from their decks – a cheery couple from Bristol with tales of spotting kingfishers by the river. That sense of shared space without intrusion is spot on here; close enough for hellos, far enough for privacy. Inside, we rustled up fish fingers and beans – nothing gourmet, just proper family fuel – and sprawled out on the sofa. The kids conked out early, knackered from fresh air, leaving us to sip tea and listen to the owl hooting outside. It's daft how a simple spot like this resets you. Staring out at the dark fields, I had a quiet moment thinking about the grind back home – emails, school runs, the lot. Here, in Lodge 8's snug bubble, it all felt miles away. No grand plans needed; just this riverside perch, a deck for morning coffee, and the promise of a gentle potter to Wareham's quay tomorrow for ice creams and a bimble by the water.

By bedtime, tucked into bunks that didn't creak once, I was already plotting a return. Dorset does that to you – wraps you in its unhurried charm, mishaps and all. If you're after a relaxed family break with simple pleasures and a smidge of lodge silliness, this is your spot. Can't recommend it enough.
