About Dorset
Pulling up to Lodge 6 on that first afternoon, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Wareham, it's one of those quaint lodges that screams "get away from it all." Hot tub bubbling away on the deck, surrounded by lush greenery—ideal for a solo three-day jaunt. The owners had left fresh milk and biscuits, which felt like a right warm welcome after the drive. I dumped my bags, laced up those inadequate trainers, and headed out for my first hike before the light faded. The plan was a gentle loop around the nearby meadows, maybe a mile or two, taking in the River Frome. Dorset does riversides like no one else—reeds swaying, birds chirping, that fresh country air hitting you like a tonic. But oh, the weather. I'd checked the forecast—sunny spells and dry, it promised. Five minutes in, and the sky turned that familiar shade of moody grey. A light drizzle started, turning the paths into a slippery adventure. No bother, I thought, pulling my cagoule tighter. It was actually rather magical, mist rolling over the water meadows, the odd sheep eyeing me suspiciously as I squelched along. By the time I looped back to the lodge, soaked to the skin but grinning like an idiot, the rain had proper set in. First impressions? Lodge 6 is a haven in a downpour—cosy lounge with a log burner that I got roaring in no time. Cuppa in hand, I watched the weather lash the windows, feeling smug for having the place to myself. Day two dawned with a cheeky bright spell, luring me out for a proper hike along the Purbeck paths towards the heaths. Trainers holding up surprisingly well, I aimed for a couple of miles through the Arne RSPB reserve area—think gorse bushes, skylarks overhead, and those classic Dorset undulations that make your calves ache just right. The sun was out, warming my face, and I even spotted a few roe deer darting off. Bliss. But wouldn't you know it, halfway round, the clouds muscled in again. Wind whipping up, turning a breezy stroll into a full-on battle against the elements. I hunkered down under a tree for a soggy sandwich, laughing at myself—here I was, middle-aged dreamer thinking I could outwit the British summer. The weather forced a rethink; instead of pushing on to the coast edge, I cut back early, letting the lodge's deck become my new "viewpoint." Rain pattering on the hot tub cover, I soaked in there later, reflecting on how these curveballs make a holiday. Life's too short for rigid plans, innit? Dorset's hikes teach you that—embrace the squelch, and you're golden. Come evening, as the clouds lifted for a dramatic sunset, I nipped out for one last short wander along the local tracks. Muddy boots (trainers, whatever) caked, heart full. Lodge 6 nailed those first impressions: intimate, weatherproof, and right in the thick of Purbeck's walking goldmine. The changing skies kept me on my toes, turning potential washouts into the best stories. Can't wait to return, proper boots in tow. |
