About Dorset
I finally made it to Granny's Teeth after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Bristol. I'd set off full of beans, playlist blasting some old indie tunes, but about halfway through Somerset, I managed to spill my entire flask of tea all over the passenger seat. Proper numpty moment—wiping it up with service station napkins while cursing my lack of a travel mug. Still, by early afternoon, I was trundling into Lyme Regis, the sea air already wafting through the cracked window, and there it was: this quirky little detached lodge tucked away in a peaceful spot just a short stroll from the town centre.

Pulling up, I couldn't help but grin at the name—Granny's Teeth. What a cracker! It's got this whimsical vibe, like the sort of place your nan might've dreamed up after one too many sherries. The wooden exterior looks snug as a bug, with a thatched roof that screams proper Dorset charm, and a private garden that's basically begging you to flop into one of those old-school deckchairs. I dumped my bags inside and was hit with that instant holiday whiff: woodsmoke from the stove, fresh linen, and a hint of sea salt sneaking in from the nearby Cobb. Cosy doesn't even cover it—two bedrooms done out in that classic seaside style, beams overhead, and a kitchen that's small but kitted out for lazy brekkies of toast and marmalade.

First impressions? Pure bliss for doing sod all. I cracked open the French doors to the garden straight away, brew in hand, and just... sat. The sun was doing its thing over the gently sloping lawn, birds cheeping away, and not a soul in sight. Lyme Regis is right there if you fancy it—five minutes' wander to the beach or the high street for a pasty from Cobbs—but why rush? I plonked myself down with a dog-eared copy of Far from the Madding Crowd (Hardy being a Dorset lad and all), feet up on a garden stool, and let the world slow right down. No emails pinging, no deadlines nagging. Just the rustle of pages and the odd seagull squawking overhead.

That first afternoon melted into a proper potter. Nipped out for a mooch along the Undercliff path—stunning coastal walk, all twisted trees and Jurassic rocks, but I only went far enough to feel the crunch of shingle underfoot before turning back for a cuppa. Back at the lodge, I fired up the barbecue (gas one, thank goodness—no faffing with charcoal), grilled some local mackerel from the fishmonger on the front, and ate it alfresco as the light faded. The garden's a belter for that: enclosed, private, with flowerbeds bursting with lavender and roses that perfumed the air. Sat there till dusk, watching bats flit about, feeling that rare luxury of time stretching out.

Evening in, and the lounge was calling. Log burner flickering (even in summer it adds that glow), I sprawled on the sofa with a glass of Dorset apple wine—crisp and local—and binge-read till my eyes drooped. No telly needed; the quiet was the entertainment. Woke the next morning to birdsong filtering through the bedroom window, kettle on for tea in bed, and repeated the joy: garden lounging, a slow amble to the beach for pebble-skipping (I'm rubbish at it, mind—most went straight plop), then back for lunch of cheese on biscuits, feet up again.

By day three, I'd hit that sweet spot of proper relaxation. Staring out at the garden from the conservatory-style bit, I had a little moment—life's mad rush back home feels miles away here. When did I last just *be*? No plans, no hustle. Granny's Teeth isn't about grand adventures; it's a hug from Dorset, whispering "stay put, love." Those first impressions sealed it: if you're after slowing down in the cosiest spot imaginable, with Lyme's charms on your doorstep but zero pressure to chase them, this is your haven. Three days of sweet nothing, and I drove off recharged, tea stain long forgotten. Can't wait to go back.
