About Dorset
Stumbling out, I was greeted by this absolute gem of a place tucked away in a quiet spot just on the edge of Dorchester. Fern House isn't some flashy Airbnb; it's a proper stone-built cottage, the sort that screams "welcome home" with its weathered front door and those classic Jurassic Coast vibes. The owner, a cheery chap named Mike, was waiting with keys in hand, chuckling at my dishevelled state. "Pheasants, eh? They're the real bosses around here," he quipped, handing over a basket of local treats—sourdough from the bakery down the road, a wedge of Dorset Blue Vinny cheese, and a bottle of cloudy cider that promised to sort out my travel woes. Pushing open the door, I was hit with that instant "ahh" moment. The living room was pure bliss: low-beamed ceiling, a wood-burning stove already set with kindling (thank you, Mike), and squishy sofas draped in woolly throws that begged you to flop down. Sunlight streamed through the sash windows, picking out the flagstone floor and a vase of fresh ferns on the mantel—cheeky nod to the name, that. I dumped my bags and wandered through to the kitchen, all shiny Aga cooker and pine cabinets stocked with proper china mugs. No poky holiday let nonsense here; it felt lived-in, like your nan's place but with better WiFi. Upstairs, the bedrooms were a dream. My room had a super-king bed piled high with feather duvets, views over the garden bursting with hydrangeas, and an en-suite that was more spa than shower—rainfall head and fluffy towels the size of small blankets. I stood there for a good five minutes, just grinning like an idiot, the arrival chaos melting away. That pheasant incident? Already hilarious in retrospect. I mean, who needs a smooth journey when the destination is this good? Stepping into the garden sealed the deal. It was a proper suntrap, enclosed with lavender borders and a wooden bench perfect for evening gins. Beyond the fence, you could hear the gentle hum of Dorchester life—kids laughing from the nearby park, church bells tolling in the distance. I fired up the barbecue (gas, thank goodness, no faffing with charcoal after my drive), cracked open that cider, and savoured my first real breath of Dorset air. It's funny how a bit of travel mayhem sharpens the senses; suddenly, every detail popped—the birdsong, the earthy scent of the soil, the way the light danced on the cottage walls. As the sun dipped low, painting the sky in those soft pinks and oranges Dorset does so well, I sat there reflecting on why I needed this. Back home, life's a whirlwind of deadlines and doom-scrolling; here, in Fern House, time slowed right down. That minor mishap on the road? It was the perfect reminder not to sweat the small stuff. Three days ahead felt like a gift, but honestly, these first impressions had me hooked already. If you're after a proper Dorset retreat, this is it—chaos optional. |
