About Dorset
Egdon Heath isn't some grand manor; it's a cosy timber lodge, all warm wood and snug nooks, with a thatched roof that screams proper Dorset charm. I arrive mid-afternoon on day one, lugging my weekend bag through the gate into a private garden that's basically a hug from nature. Birdsong everywhere, lavender buzzing with bees, and a couple of weathered benches begging you to plonk down with a cuppa. The host hands over the keys with a cheery wave – no fuss, just a "Enjoy the peace, love" – and I'm in. First impressions? Bliss. The open-plan living space has a wood-burning stove (unlit, thank goodness, it's balmy out), squishy sofas piled with cushions, and French doors spilling onto that garden. Kitchen's kitted out with everything you'd need for lazy self-catering: fresh eggs from a local farm in the welcome basket, a bottle of Dorset cider, and posh tea bags that make PG Tips look pedestrian. I dump my stuff and flop straight into an armchair with Thomas Hardy's *Far from the Madding Crowd* – fitting, given the name Egdon Heath, nicked from his Wessex novels. The light filters through the trees, dappling the pages, and for the first time in months, my phone stays face-down. No emails, no notifications, just the gentle rustle of leaves and the odd gull crying overhead. Lunch is a no-brainer: cheese on toast using that local cheddar from the basket, eaten al fresco while watching butterflies flirt with the buddleia. It's daft how satisfying doing sod all can be – no itinerary, no rush, just sinking into the rhythm of the place. Day two dawns with mist rolling in from the nearby Fleet Lagoon – you can smell the salt on the breeze, even from here. I potter out for a gentle wander, ambling less than a mile down lanes fringed with wildflowers to Weymouth Harbour. It's all there: colourful beach huts, fishing boats bobbing, families licking ice creams from the Old Harbour. I grab a crab sandwich from a shack – fresh as you'll get, £5 well spent – and dawdle back, detouring through a quiet park where blackberries hang ripe for the picking. Back at the lodge, it's hammock time in the garden. Swinging lazily, book forgotten, I just listen to the world slow down. A squirrel dashes across the fence, and I chuckle thinking how my mates back home are probably glued to their desks, while I'm here mastering the art of lounging. By evening, I've lit a few candles (battery ones, health and safety first), cracked open that cider, and sprawled on the deck with a sunset view. The sky turns pink over the rooftops, and I reflect on how knackered I've been lately – rushing from meeting to deadline, forgetting to breathe. This place, with its unpretentious comfort and enveloping quiet, is a gentle nudge: slow down, mate. You don't need grand adventures; sometimes the best holiday is savouring the small stuff, like the way the dew sparkles on the grass come morning. Day three mirrors the rest – more reading (got halfway through Hardy, loving the slow burn), a saunter to a nearby beach for pebble-skipping and toe-dipping in the shallows, then back for tea and toast. No drama, no drama required. Leaving Egdon Heath feels like abandoning an old friend, but I'll be back. If you're after proper RandR in Dorset, this is your spot – pure joy in doing very little indeed. |
