About Dorset
I finally made it to Deluxe 4 near Dorchester after a bit of a faff on the journey down from London. Picture this: I'd packed the car the night before, all smug about my three-day Dorset escape, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Salisbury. It insisted on rerouting me down some muddy farm track that was clearly meant for tractors, not my little hatchback. I ended up with a splattering of cow muck on the wheel arches and a mild panic about getting stuck – classic me, turning a two-and-a-half-hour drive into a comedy of errors. But hey, I laughed it off, scraped off the worst with a twig, and pressed on. By early afternoon, I was pulling into the gravel drive of this cracking four-bedroom cottage, right on the edge of the West Dorset countryside.

First impressions? Blimey, what a stunner. Deluxe 4 isn't some poky holiday let; it's got that perfect blend of cosy and spacious, with a big open-plan kitchen-diner that screams "whip up a Full English here." The decking out back overlooks rolling fields – proper Dorset postcard stuff – and there's parking for days, which was a godsend after my morning mishap. I dumped my bags, cracked open a cuppa, and just soaked it in. The air was crisp, that fresh countryside tang you don't get in the city, and I could already hear the faint bleat of sheep in the distance. Ensuites in every bedroom? Luxury. I claimed the master with its en-suite shower – spotless, powerful water pressure, the works. Felt like I'd stumbled into a mate's posh farmhouse rather than a rental.

Keen to stretch my legs after the drive, I laced up my boots for a wander along the nearby paths. Dorset's got some belters right on the doorstep here, nothing too strenuous for day one. I headed out towards the fields behind the cottage, aiming for a gentle loop around the local meadows – maybe three miles, flat enough for a first go. The weather was playing nice at first: blue skies, a gentle breeze rustling the hedgerows. I trundled along, spotting buzzards wheeling overhead and wildflowers nodding in the grass. It's those little moments that hit you – no signal on my phone, just me, the mud underfoot, and the peace of it all. Made me reflect on how I never switch off properly back home; work emails buzzing like angry wasps. Here, it was like the world had hit pause.

But oh, British weather – the great leveller. Halfway round, the clouds rolled in like they owned the place, turning a drizzle into a proper downpour in minutes. I ducked under a massive oak for shelter, hood up, grinning like an idiot as the rain hammered the leaves. Plans for a longer hike to the river meadows? Scrubbed. Instead, I improvised, splashing back via a shorter farm track that hugged the cottage grounds. Muddy boots everywhere, but what a laugh – I slipped once, landed on my arse in a puddle, and emerged looking like a drowned rat. Burst through the door at Deluxe 4, dripping, and straight into that massive shower. Bliss.

Drying off by the window, watching the rain lash the decking, I realised that's Dorset's charm: you roll with it. The cottage was my perfect base – warm underfoot, telly on for a weather report (more rain incoming), and a cheeky pasty from the local shop in Dorchester to warm my cockles. First day in, and already hooked. Those hikes, interrupted or not, had me buzzing for more. Tomorrow? Another crack at the trails, come hell or high water.
